Paris Olympics 2024 Day 8 Highlights: Nishant Dev misses medal, Imane Khelif secures medal

After leading in the first round, Nishant Dev has lost his quarterfinal match 1:4 against Marco Verde. It seemed he was in command, but as the match went along, his Mexcan opponent came back hard.

Marco Verde has hit back and won the second round. It's now the turn of Nishant Dev to try and make a comeback. It's getting tight here in Paris. 

Nishant Dev has come out fighting with jabs and punches in the first round. He wins the opening round 4.1. Pressure is right on Marco Verde to stage a comeback. 

No Indian man has won a boxing medal at the Olympics since Vijender Singh bagged bronze back in Beijing. Nishant is looking to become the fourth after Vijender, Mary Kom and Lovlina Borgohain to bag an Olympic medal in boxing. 

We are moments away from Nishant Dev's boxing match. The bout will start after the ongoing bout between Zead Eashash and Lewis Richardson that is underway at the North Paris Arena.

Qinwen Zheng has won the gold medal after beating Donna Vekic 6-2, 6-3 in the gold medal match on Sturday at Philippe-Chatrier. She became the first Chinese player to win a tennis gold at the Olympics. 

Imane Khelif has etched history after becoming the first Algerian female boxer to win an Olympic medal by beating Hungary's Luca Anna Hamori by unanimous decision of 5-0. Khelif will be up next in her semi-final clash, but a medal has been garunteed for the Algerian.

Imane Khelif bags the second round and was awarded an 8 and four 9s to her favour by the judges. Things are looking poised to go in the way of the Algerian.

Imane Kehlif has utterly dominated  Luca Anna Hamori in the first round, which has gine in the Algerian's favour by a unanimous 5-0 score by the judges. 

Imane Khelif is in action for her quarter-final clash against Luca Anna Hamori, which might seal the chance for her to become the first Algerian women to win an Olympics medal in boxing.

Maheshwari Chauhan finishes 8th on Day 1 of women's skeet qualification. 

Dhillon Raiza finishes 25th among 29 shooters after three series on Day 1. 

Top 6 qualify for the final and Maheshwari stands a great chance to go through. 

Qinwen Zheng has taken the opening set 6-2 against Donna Vekic in 48 minutes. She was clinical as she converted both the break point chances that she got. Vekic had a couple of chances to break, but she missed both of them. 

Algerian boxer Imane Khelif, who has been at the centre of a gender controversy after her bout against Italy's Angela Carini, is up in action for her quarter-final clash against Hungary's Luca Anna Hamori. 

Qinwen Zheng and Donna Vekic are fighting it out on Centre Court for the gold medal in women's tennis. Zheng is in red-hot form after she knocked out World No.1 Iga Swiatek out of the competition. She is looking to be the first from China to win an Olympic gold in tennis. 

Nikhat Zareen, who was knocked out in the pre-quarterfinal of the women's 50kg boxing, reflects on her Paris campaign and vows to come back stronger. 

"The Olympic dream I've cherished for so long didn't unfold as I had hoped. After countless hours of training, sacrifices, and unwavering determination, this moment slipped through my fingers. This defeat is the hardest I've ever faced; it cuts deep and is almost unbearable. My heart is heavy, but it remains unbroken. I accept it with grace and will do my best to find a way forward in my life,." she said in a post on X. 

"Winning an Olympic medal was my greatest dream, and I fought with everything I had to get here. The Paris 2024 journey was filled with challenges-battling through a year of injury, struggling to reclaim my spot, fighting for the opportunity to compete, and overcoming countless obstacles, all for the chance to represent our country on this global stage.

"I'm deeply grateful for the chance to pursue my dream, but destiny had other plans. Not achieving it here in Paris is devastating. I wish I could turn back time and put in even more effort for a different outcome, but that remains a wish.

"I promise this isn't the end. I'll return home to recover and clear my mind. This dream is still alive, and I will continue to chase it with renewed passion. This is not goodbye but a promise to return, to fight harder, and to make you all proud.

"Thank you for standing by me. The journey continues."

What a final! Lim Si-Hyeon wins the women's individual Gold medal, beating compatriot Nam Suhyeon, who defeated Deepika Kumari in the quarter-final. She wins the final 7-3. 

Lim Si-Hyeon won the mixed team Gold and won the Gold with the women's team. She broke the record in the qualifying as well. 

She does what An San did three years ago in Tokyo.

Manu Bhaker reflects on her dream Paris Olympics campaign. The 22-year-old retuns home with two medals and a fourth-place finish. 

It will be a big day for badminton on 4 August as all semi-final matches will be played in both men's and women's singles events.

The women's singles semi-finals will be followed by the men's event, where Lakshya Sen will be taking on Viktor Axelsen.

India's Maheshwari Chauhan shootts 23, 24, and 24 in the first three series of women's skeet qualification. She is likely to remain in the race for a spot in the final. The top 6 from 29 shooters will make it to the final. The last two rounds will be held on Sunday morning.

Another Indian shooter in the event, Raiza Dhillon, shot 21 and 22 in the first two series. She is currently shooting her third. 

The Koreans continue to dominate archery. Three archers from South Korea are in the semi-final of women's individual. 

The dream to win an Olympic medal in archery for India ends with Deepika Kumari crashing out of the Women's individual archery, after losing to South Korea's Su-hyeon in the quarter-finals. Deepika's elimination came only few hours after Bhajan Kaur's elimination in her quarter-final clash.

South Korea's Su-hyeon has bagged the decisive Set 5 by 29-27 and tough luck for Deepika Kumari, who loses this quarter-final clash by 4-6. The Archery dream ends empty for India with Deepika.

Tough luck for Deepika as she loses Set 4 to Su-hyeon by 27-29, and it is all level between the two archers 4-4.

SET 3 GOES TO DEEPIKA!!! A double 10 and a 9 has seen Deepika beat Su-hyeon by 29-28 and it is now 4-2 in favour of the Indian archer. 

DEEPIKA LOSES SET 2!!  A 6-pointer has caused the difference in this clash and Su-hyeon takes Set 2 by 28-25. The two archers afre level at 2-2 now.

DEEPIKA FOR THE WIN IN SET 1!!! The Indian archer has started off on a very good foot forward as she beats Su-hyeon by 28-26.

Deepika Kumari is all set to take on South Korea's Nam Su-hyeon in their Women's Archery Quarter-final clash. Deepika has started off well but will need to maintain her composure.

Anant Jeet Singh comes up with a relatively better series on Day 2 of men's skeet qualification. He shoots 24 and 24 in the last two series. However, his poor rounds on Friday seems to have cost him. He shot 23, 22, 23 on Day 1 of the qualification. 

Deepika Kumari will take on South Korea's Nam Suhyeon in the quarter-final of women's individual quarter-final.

Can Deepika better her best-ever performance? She is up against 61st-ranked Nam Suhyeon. Can she get past the South Korean?

World 100m champion Noah Lyles finishes second in Heat 3 of men's 100m Round 1. Not a good start from the American and he finishes with a timing of 10.04s. Louie Hinchliffe of Great Britain wins the heat. He is elated. He finishes with a timing of 9.98m. The top 3 from each of the 8 heats and the next best three will make it to the semi-final. Hinchliffe has the fastest timing so far in the first three heats. 

Keep in mind, Kishane Thompson of Jamaica has the best timing of the year -- 9.77s. 

Deepika Kumari to face Korea's Nam Suhyeon, a 2nd seeded archer in the quarter-final round of the women's singles archery event.

Heartbreak for Bhajan Kaur. The 18-year-old shoots an 8 in the shoot-off. Indonesia's Choirunisa Diananda shot a 9 and progresses to the quarter-final.

It was a big disappointment for Bhajan Kaur, who was consistently good in her maiden Olympic appearance. She forced a shoot-off after coming back from behind, but was not able to deliver in the crunch moment.

Bhajan Kaur holds her nerve. She shoots 27 in the final set, beating her Indonesian opponent by just a point. She shot 10 in the last arrow of the set. What a composure from the 18-year-old! 

This is top class from the young Indian. 

We head into the shoot-off. 

Bhajan Kaur hit 2 9s and one 10 in the fourth set. The Indonesian matched here. The set is tied. 

Bhajan Kaur trails 3-5 with a set to go. She needs nothing less than a win to force a shoot-off. 

Bhajan Kaur has lost the third set. She shot 9, 8, and 9 while the Indonesian was in peak form, hitting 2 10s and a 9. Pressure on the 18-year-old in the upcoming must-win set. 

A 7 in the final shot of the set from Indonesia's Diananda when she needed 10 to win the set. Bhajan Kaur takes the second set to make it 2-2. She began with an 8 but recovered and hit a 10 in that set. This is goof from the teenager. 

Bhajan Kaur of India loses the first set 28-29. The 18-year-old opened with an 8 and that cost her the opening set. Terrific shooting this from the Indonesian as she hits two 10s in the first set. 

Bhajan Kaur is up against Diananda Choirunisa of Indonesia in the Round of 16. Bhajan is ranked 45 while her Indonesian opponent is 38th in world archery individual recurve rankings. 

Deepika Kumari has tied the 5th set to progress to the quarterfinals. A brilliant redemption story continues for the Indian archer. 

She reaches the quarter-final for the second time in her Olympics career. 

Final Score: 6-4. 

Michelle Kroppen claws her way back into the contest taking the 4th set. The match is now 5-3 still in favour of Deepika as the intensity is increasing. 

Deepika Kumari and Michelle Kroppen shot a 7 each in that set. However, Deepika recovered with a 10 and a 9 to take the third set.

She leads 5-1 at the end of 3 sets. She need a draw or a win in the remaining two sets to progress to the quarter-final. 

Deepika Kumar hits a 10, 8 and 9 in that set. Michelle Kroppen was more consistent, hitting 3 9s. No goof-up from the German unlike the first set. She takes a point from this. 

Deepika leads the Round of 16 match 3-1. 

A terrific start for Deepika Kumari in the women's Round of 16. The German began with a six and it affected her chances. Deepika, however, did not give her an inch, shooting 3 9s in that set. 

Deepika takes the early 2-0 lead. 

Olympics Gold medallist Abhinav Bindra pens a heartfelt note to Manu Bhaker after her campaign in Paris came to an end. 

The focus shifts to the women's archery event as India's Deepika Kumari and Bhajan Kaur will take part in the pre-quarterfinal events.. 

Deepika Kumari will be in action against Michelle Kroppen of Germany in the Round of 16. Deepika is ranked 12th while her opponent is ranked 13th in the women's individual recurve list. 

Camille Jedrzejewski and Jiin to have a SO for gold. Jiin gets four greens, compared to Jedrzejewski who gets one hit to finish with silver.

Hungary's Major Veronika will be giving a tough fight to Manu Bhaker in the women's 25m pistol event. She topped the qualification with 582 points, 2 more than Manu who finished second. Manu won bronze in the 25m pistol event at the 2023 World Cup in Bhopal. She won an Asian Games gold in the 25m pistol team event last year in Hangzhou.

India's shooting sensation Manu Bhaker will be back in action in her quest for 3rd medal at the Paris Olympics 2024. Manu will take part in the final of the women's 25m pistol event on August 3, Saturday at the Chateauroux Shooting Centre. With two bronze medals already in her bag, the 22-year-old will be aiming for a hat-trick of medals. Manu won bronze in the women's 25m air pistol event and followed it up with another bronze in the 25m air pistol in the mixed team event alongside Sarabjot Singh.

Shuttler Lakshya Sen headlined India’s performance on Day 7 of the Paris Olympics 2024. The youngster, who is making his debut in the quadrennial event, became the first man from his country to qualify for the semi-final of badminton singles. He lost the opening set to Taiwan’s Chou Tien-chen, but won the match 19-21, 21-15, 21-12.

India had an impressive day in hockey after they beat Australia 3-2 in a Pool B match. India also beat the Aussies for the first time in 52 years since the 1952 Berlin Games. Manu Bhaker gave herself a chance of winning her third medal of the Paris Olympics after she finished second in the qualification round of the women’s 25m pistol event.

Manu Bhaker is on the cusp of a massive record. No Indian has won three medals in a single edition of the Olympics. The youngster has a chance to win her third medal in Paris when she takes part in the final of the 25m women’s Pistol event. She also won the bronze medals in the 10m Pistol events (individual and team).

Nishant Dev also has a chance to confirm a medal when he takes part in the quarterfinal of the men’s 71kg event in boxing. Anant Jeet Singh Naruka, Maheshwari Chauhan and Raiza Dhillon also have a chance to finish the day with medals as they take part in the skeet events in shooting.

Shubhankar Sharma and Gaganjeet Bhullar will be in action in the third round of the men’s Individual Stroke Play in golf. In archery, Bhajan Kaur and Deepika Kumar will be in action in the quarterfinals as India look for their maiden Olympic medal in the sport. Nethra Kumaran and Vishnu Saravanan will represent India in sailing.
