OpenAI is putting ChatGPT adult mode on hold, here is why

OpenAI has reportedly decided to pause the development of adding an "erotic" mode to ChatGPT. The decision comes at a time when the Sam Altman-led startup is reducing its distractions to focus on enterprise products and bring in private equity investors.

OpenAI may be cancelling its plans for an “erotic mode” in ChatGPT. The company has reportedly paused development of the adult mode of the chatbot indefinitely. This moves come at a time when many have raised concerns over the erotica version of ChatGPT amid increasing pressure on OpenAI to attract more investment.

As per a report from the Financial Times, the company has shelved plans to release the erotic chatbot “indefinitely.” OpenAI is instead doubling down on enterprise products in an effort to catch up with Anthropic.

What is ChatGPT’s erotic mode?

The adult mode, first announced by CEO Sam Altman in October last year, was designed to allow sexually explicit conversations with verified adult users.

However, the feature has faced strong internal opposition over potential risks, including encouraging unhealthy emotional dependence on AI and exposing minors to inappropriate content.

Earlier this month, the company reportedly delayed the launch of the adult mode, and now it has decided to stop development for the foreseeable future.

Why is OpenAI pausing erotic ChatGPT release

OpenAI is going through a strategic pivot towards its core products, including ChatGPT and coding agent Codex. The company recently announced that it was shutting down the generative video platform Sora.

Previously, the AI startup has informed employees that it cannot afford to be distracted by “sidequests.”

The Sam Altman-led firm is trying to attract private equity investors in a push for enterprise customers. Private equity firms have been offered a guaranteed rate of return of 17.5 per cent as well as early access to new ChatGPT models. For context, Anthropic does not guarantee any rate of return for similar investments.

OpenAI is also said to be working on a new super-app that would combine ChatGPT, Codex, and its browser, ChatGPT Atlas.

Concerns over ChatGPT erotic mode

OpenAI’s advisory council on well-being and AI had expressed serious reservations during a January meeting, warning that the feature could foster compulsive use and emotional over-reliance.

At the time, the company had stated that it was planning to conduct long-term research on the effects of sexually explicit chats and emotional attachments before deciding on the product's future.

xAI’s Grok chatbot does generate explicit content. However, it has faced scrutiny from various governments after users used the AI to undress people without their consent on X.
