India Today Conclave 2017: Women's safety is in their freedom, says former JNUSU Vice-President Shehla Rashid

Former Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union Vice-President Shehla Rashid said today that women's safety lies in their freedom, and in places where they are represented.

"Our safety is in our freedom. That's the thing. Our safety is in places where we are represented. And JNU, for example, has a progressive admission policy where girls are encouraged to apply," she said.

Her remarks came in response to TV Today Managing Editor Rahul Kanwal's question about space in politics for women. To be more precise, he asked whether it was the Right or the Left that gave them more space.

This exchange was part of a wide-ranging panel discussion titled 'Big Issue: Girls Uninterrupted - Left, Right, Or My Right?' The other panelists were gender rights activist Sabika Abbas Naqvi, and Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad members Jahnavi Ojha and Varada Marathe.
