A candidate shared how a perfectly smooth job interview suddenly took a pop-culture turn, leaving him spiralling through every Netflix show he had ever watched, all because of one question he never saw coming.

The candidate shared his amusing interview experience on Reddit’s r/IndianWorkplace forum in a post titled, “Interviewer asked me my favourite Netflix series am I cooked?”

In the post, he explained that he had been interviewing for a role at a mid-sized creative agency and, by all accounts, things seemed to be going surprisingly well.

According to the candidate, the conversation had been flowing naturally, he was answering questions confidently, and the overall “vibes” of the interview felt positive, until the interviewer suddenly threw in a question that completely caught him off guard.

“They randomly asked, ‘What’s your favourite Netflix show?’” he wrote.

Instead of a straightforward response, the question triggered instant panic.

“Like suddenly every single show I’ve ever watched started flashing in my head at once,” he said, admitting that he quickly began overthinking whether his answer would come across as too “basic” or clich, especially for a creative agency role.

After what seemed like a mental scramble, he eventually blurted out The Crown, only to discover that the interviewers had not even watched the show.

“Should’ve just said Stranger Things and moved on with my life,” he joked.

The post soon turned into a space for others to share the most random or oddly specific questions they had faced during interviews, with many admitting that unexpected ice-breakers could feel more stressful than actual technical rounds.

One Reddit user recalled being asked about their favourite movie during an interview and impulsively replying with Gone Girl. According to them, the interviewer, who was an American man, responded by saying, “That’s deep!” The user added, much to everyone’s amusement, that they eventually got selected.

Another commenter joked that saying Dark would have been the ultimate power move, claiming the interviewer probably would not have followed up with any more questions after that.

Someone else shared a similarly bizarre experience, saying they were once grilled about their favourite PlayStation game during an interview. After naming The Last of Us, the interviewer unexpectedly asked for the publisher’s name, leaving them convinced they had ruined their chances.

As it turned out, the question was apparently more about confidence than gaming knowledge, and they ended up getting the job.

The lighthearted post led to conversations online about the strange, oddly personal questions candidates sometimes faced during interviews, and how sometimes, getting hired could depend just as much on surviving the unexpected as answering the actual job-related questions.
