What looked like a bizarre street-side “langar” in Chandigarh quickly spiralled into controversy after videos showing alcohol being openly served outside a liquor shop went viral online, prompting police action and widespread outrage on social media.

The incident took place in Sector 9 market, where a group of men outside a liquor shop were seen pouring alcohol over snow cones and distributing them publicly in the open. The unusual promotional activity was quickly dubbed “Liquor Langar” by social media users, with many criticising the event for openly serving alcohol in a crowded public space.

Following the backlash, the Chandigarh Police arrested the liquor vend owner and launched an investigation into the matter.

During the probe, officials found that flavoured vodka was used as part of the promotional activity.

Confirming the action taken, Chandigarh Deputy Commissioner Nishant Yadav said, “A video went viral showing liquor being served in the open outside a liquor shop in Sector 9. An FIR has been registered against whoever had organised this arrangement there.”

He further stated that the Excise Department had issued a notice to the licence holder of the liquor vend. “We have conveyed a stern message to all licensees: if anyone engages in such activities outside their shops, which constitutes a violation of the Excise Policy, the Department will take strict action against them,” he added.

While some social media users reacted with memes and jokes around the term “Liquor Langar”, many others criticised the organisers, saying public places should not be turned into open alcohol-serving zones for promotional stunts.
