A video by a Delhi University student alleging she was barred from going on stage for wearing a sleeveless outfit at a women’s empowerment event has sparked a heated debate, with contrasting accounts now adding layers to the controversy.

The incident took place at Shri Ram College of Commerce during a mock parliament event themed on “Nari Shakti.” The video was shared by Saarah Sharma, a student of Daulat Ram College, who claimed she was stopped from participating in a felicitation ceremony due to her attire.

In the clip, Sharma said she had been invited to take part in the session and was also selected to felicitate the judges. However, things changed once she reached the venue.

She alleged, “Yeh ek purely women’s conference thi, matlab yahan saare portfolios women ko diye gaye the. Yahan chief guest ke roop mein D. Mansukh Mandaviya ji khud aaye the, aur mujhe felicitation ke liye bulaya gaya tha. Jab main wahan pahunchi, toh ministry officials ne mujhe dekha aur kaha ki aapne sleeveless pehna hai, aap unko felicitate nahi kar sakti (This was a purely women’s conference, meaning all the portfolios were assigned to women. The chief guest here was Dr Mansukh Mandaviya himself, and I was invited to felicitate the judges. When I reached there, the ministry officials saw me and said that since I was wearing a sleeveless outfit, I could not felicitate them).”

According to Sharma, the comment was made publicly, which left her feeling embarrassed and uncomfortable. She added that she was dressed in a traditional suit, similar to other participants, except that it was sleeveless.

However, as the video gained traction, alternative versions of events began to emerge. Another student, Vibha Chhabra, who was also part of the felicitation process, offered a different perspective. She claimed that Sharma had already been selected for multiple stage roles and eventually agreed to step back from the felicitation after a discussion. Chhabra also maintained that no objection was raised regarding Sharma’s outfit, noting that others wearing similar clothing were not stopped.

A more detailed account was shared by Instagram user Disha Goyal, who said she witnessed the exchange firsthand. “Well, here's the truth from somebody who was right there when the entire conversation happened,” she wrote, explaining that Sharma held a key portfolio and was already scheduled for major responsibilities, including delivering a speech and raising a motion.

Disha Goyal further added that another participant had requested to take up the felicitation role, leading to a discussion among the students.

According to her, Saarah Sharma initially resisted but eventually agreed to step aside. “Even I'm a girl and I would be the first one to stand if anything like that would have actually happened Please stop doing anything and everything for social media fame,” she wrote.
