French First Lady Brigitte Macron slapped President Emmanuel Macron during a foreign trip last year after allegedly discovering messages exchanged between him and Iranian-born actress Golshifteh Farahani on his phone, a newly published book claimed.

The book’s claims, which have been denied by both Macron and his wife, centre on a viral video from last year that showed the couple exiting a plane. A moment in the video had been interpreted by many as visuals of Macron’s wife shoving him. Back then, Macron had downplayed the incident.

Now, a new book called An (Almost) Perfect Couple, by journalist Florian Tardif, has claimed the exchange with Farahani actually led to tensions between the couple before the scene from Hanoi in May last year.

The viral video had shown Macron apparently being shoved by the First Lady aboard a plane on their arrival in Vietnam last year, with the Elysee Palace downplaying the clip as a “moment of closeness” between the couple.

The incident had drawn further attention after US President Donald Trump took a swipe at Macron, quipping, “Make sure the door remains closed.” He later claimed the French President’s wife “treats him extremely badly”.

The book now offers fresh details about what unfolded in May last year.

According to excerpts from the book published in French media, Macron allegedly told the actress, “I find you very pretty.” Farahani, who is known to be a staunch critic of the regime in Tehran, allegedly maintained a “platonic relationship” with Macron for several months, reports said.

Speaking to a French outlet, the author further said, the President and the First Lady "regret it today at the Elysee simply because they could have shown at that moment that they were a couple, a real couple, not a perfect couple, which is the image we had been given since the start of the first presidential term".

Claiming that everything mentioned in his book was based on facts, he added that Macron and Farahani maintained a relationship.

"It is a version that I cross-checked because everything included in the book is based on facts, facts and only facts. The President of the Republic, although this is no longer the case now, had for several months maintained what I was told was a platonic relationship," he added.

Representatives for Brigitte Macron have denied the claims, telling French daily Le Parisien that the First Lady “categorically denied” the account and would never check her husband’s phone. Macron’s office also said the moment was merely playful banter between the couple before an official engagement. The French President later said they were “joking around” and urged people to “calm down” over the footage.

Farahani has also dismissed rumours of any relationship with Macron, saying earlier this year that people spreading such gossip were “lacking love” in their lives.
