Prime Minister Narendra Modi has congratulated Tarique Rahman on the victory of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party in Bangladeshâs parliamentary elections and on his appointment as Prime Minister. In his message, PM Modi said the electoral mandate reflects the peopleâs trust in Rahmanâs leadership and vision for peace, stability and prosperity.
Emphasising the deep-rooted ties between India and Bangladesh, he highlighted cooperation in connectivity, trade, technology, energy and cultural exchanges. The PM also invited Rahman, Dr Zubaida Rahman and their daughter Zaima to visit India.
Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has appointed 10 advisers, granting them the ranks of minister and state minister.
Five individuals have been given the status of minister. They are Mirza Abbas Uddin Ahmed, Nazrul Islam Khan, Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed, Md Ismail Zabihullah, and Rashed Al Mahmud Titumir.
In addition, five more advisers have been appointed with the rank of state minister. They include Humayun Kabir, Shamsul Islam, Zahed Ur Rahman, Mahadi Amin, and Rehan Asif Asad.
The appointments formalize the new prime ministerâs advisory team, with the selected individuals set to assist in governmental functions while holding ranks equivalent to ministers and state ministers.
Speaker of the Lok Sabha, Om Birla wrote on X that he was glad to have been able to attend the swearing-in ceremony of the "new Government of Bangladesh led by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman in Dhaka today."
He also stated that India stands ready to support Bangladesh's endeavours to build "a democratic, progressive and inclusive nation."
Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami chief, Shafiqur Rahman, stated that the BNP, by refusing to take the oath to join the Constitution Reform Commission, has ignored and shown contempt for the July mass uprising. He was reported by Prothom Alo as stating that "We believe that by not taking the oath, the ruling party has ignored and disrespected July. This, in our view, places them against public aspirations. Their position against reforms is clear."
The BNP had refused to take the oath to join the Commission, with BNP Standing Committee Member, Salahuddin Ahmed justifying the decision, arguing that the Commission lacked any form of recognition from Bangladesh's Constitution. This had led the Jamaat-led 11 party bloc to declare they would boycott the cabinet swearing-in ceremony.
Speaker of the Lok Sabha, Om Birla, met Bangladesh's new PM Tarique Rahman, following the swearing-in of the new BNP Government. Writing on X, Riaz Hamidullah, Bangladeshi High Commissioner to India, stated that Birla had invited Rahman to visit India, and both leaders expressed optimism to work together for the wellbeing of the people of Bangladesh and India.
The Bangladeshi newspaper Prothom Alo reported that no Ministers or State Ministers from destrcits dominated by the Awami Leagu and the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islamo have been appointed to PM Tarique Rahman's cabinet. The report stated that no BNP MP's from Awami League dominated districts like Gopalganj, Madaripur and Shariatpur and Jamaat strongholds like Kapasia, Tangail, Gaibandha, Rangpur and others.
Pakistan's Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives, Ahsan Iqbal Chaudhary, who visited Bangladesh as the country's representative to the cabinet swearing-in ceremony, paid a visit to erstwhile Chief Advisor of Bangladesh Muhammad Yunus. Bhutan PM Tshering Tobgay paid a courtesy call on Muhammad Yunus at Dhaka's State Guest House Jamuna on Tuesday. During the meeting, Tobgay thanked Yunus for overseeing a free, fair and peaceful election at a crucial juncture for the country, posted the X handle of the Chief Advisor of the Government of Bangladesh.

The National Citizens Party (NCP) has announced that it will not be present at the cabinet swearing-in ceremony. The oath-taking will be held at the South Plaza of the National Parliament at 4pm BDT (3:30pm IST) today.

Among those called to take oath are Nitai Roy Chowdhury, representing the Hindu community, and Dipen Dewan, a Chakma Buddhist leader.

Among them, Mohammad Amin Ur Rashid and Khalilur Rahman will take oath as technocrat ministers, reported the newspaper.
Tarique Rahman, the chief of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, was unanimously elected as the leader of the party's parliamentary group.
He was elected to lead the party in Parliament at a meeting held at around 11.15 am on Tuesday, February 17.
Earlier, at about 10.15 am, the newly elected BNP MPs took oath. After the swearing-in ceremony, the MPs, including Tarique Rahman, attended the parliamentary party meeting, where they formally signed the oath register, reported Desh Rupantor.
