Bahrain has sentenced nine people to life imprisonment for allegedly carrying out “hostile and terrorist acts” in coordination with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

According to state media, two other defendants were sentenced to three years in prison after being convicted of cooperating with the IRGC in what prosecutors described as “terrorism and espionage” activities.

The convictions come amid an intensified crackdown by Bahraini authorities on individuals accused of links to Tehran. The crackdown followed a wave of Iranian strikes on Bahrain after the US and Israel launched their war on Iran in late February. Iran later targeted Gulf states hosting American military assets, saying it was attacking US interests in the region.

Prosecutors alleged that some of the accused photographed sensitive and strategic locations in Bahrain for the IRGC, while others facilitated the transfer of funds from Iran to Bahrain, including through cryptocurrency transactions, to finance the operations, Al Jazeera reported.

The US has criticised the failure of the 2026 Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) Review Conference to adopt a consensus final document, blaming disagreements over Iran’s nuclear programme.

In a statement, the US State Department said it deeply regretted the inability of NPT member states to reach an agreement, accusing some countries of failing to take “Iran’s threat to global nonproliferation seriously”.

Washington said the deadlock was particularly disappointing amid “Iran’s continued noncompliance” with safeguards required under the NPT and monitored by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), as well as Tehran’s “escalating nuclear activities” that it claimed lack any credible civilian purpose.

Oil prices fell sharply on Monday as the US and Iran remained divided over a peace agreement, raising fears that ongoing curbs on oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz could weigh on global economic growth.

Brent crude futures dropped $4.64, or 4.48%, to $98.90 a barrel by 2203 GMT, while US West Texas Intermediate crude declined $4.42, or 4.58%, to $92.18 a barrel, according to Reuters.

US President Donald Trump and his administration have come under criticism from both Republican and Democratic lawmakers over the past 24 hours.

In an interview with CNN, Republican Senator Thom Tillis questioned why Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth and other officials had claimed nearly three months ago that Iran’s capabilities had been “obliterated”.

“Now we’re talking about a posture where we may accept the nuclear material may remain in Iran,” Tillis said. “How does that make sense at all? There are a lot of things that need to be explained.”

His remarks came after Senator Roger Wicker warned a day earlier that the reported 60-day ceasefire agreement “would be a disaster”.

Qatar’s Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani and Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud discussed ongoing US-Iran negotiations during a phone call, Qatar’s foreign ministry said.

The two leaders also reviewed efforts to support mediation aimed at easing tensions and strengthening regional security and stability.

The talks came after a Qatari delegation visited Tehran to back Pakistan’s mediation efforts.

US President Donald Trump posted another cryptic image directed at Iran on Truth Social, sharing a picture of a bomb attached to a military aircraft carrying the words: "THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER!"

The teasing post came amid ongoing uncertainty over a possible US-Iran agreement and follows several recent Trump messages mixing warnings, and optimism about negotiations with Tehran.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio accused Hezbollah of attempting to push Lebanon back into instability, condemning what he described as the group's efforts to undermine the country's elected government.

In a statement, Rubio criticised Hezbollah's "reckless call to overthrow Lebanon's democratically elected government" and said the Iran-backed group was "actively trying to drag Lebanon back into chaos and destruction."

An Israeli air strike on the southern Lebanese town of Arab Salim killed two people and wounded 10 others, according to Lebanon's Health Ministry.

Health officials said one of those killed was a paramedic, while six other wounded people were also paramedics responding to the attack. The strikes came hours after another Israeli raid reportedly destroyed a civil defence centre in the city of Nabatieh.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said negotiations with Iran remain highly complex and cannot be completed hastily, following President Donald Trump's warning against rushing into an agreement to end the three-month conflict.

Speaking to The New York Times, Rubio said any potential agreement had received support from countries in the region, but stressed that technical nuclear negotiations require time and detailed discussions.

"We're not kicking it till later. Nuclear talks are highly technical matters. You can't do a nuclear thing in 72 hours on the back of a napkin," Rubio said.

US President Donald Trump said negotiations with Iran are still not fully complete, while again making clear that Tehran would never be allowed to develop a nuclear weapon under any agreement reached by his administration.

He defended the ongoing talks and attacked the nuclear deal negotiated under former President Barack Obama, claiming it gave Iran "a clear and open path to a Nuclear Weapon".

"If I make a deal with Iran, it will be a good and proper one," Trump wrote.

Several Arab and Muslim-majority countries have condemned Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir over his treatment of activists detained from the Gaza-bound Global Sumud Flotilla.

In a joint statement cited by Qatar's Foreign Ministry, the governments of Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, the UAE, Indonesia, Pakistan, Egypt and Turkey described Ben-Gvir's actions as "horrific, humiliating, and unacceptable".

The condemnation followed a video posted by Ben-Gvir showing blindfolded activists kneeling with their hands bound at Ashdod port after Israeli forces intercepted the aid flotilla bound for Gaza earlier this week. The statement said the minister's conduct "constitutes a disgraceful assault on human dignity and a clear violation of Israel's obligations under international law".

Iran is scrambling to prevent widespread power blackouts after recent US and Israeli strikes damaged parts of the country's energy infrastructure, according to First Vice President Mohammad Reza Aref. Speaking to state-linked ISNA, Aref said some power plants were no longer able to meet industrial electricity demands, forcing authorities to divert electricity from the national grid.

"Some plants cannot provide the production needed by the industry, and we are forced to supply them with electricity from the grid," Aref said.

"Our general discussion is on using energy optimally and appropriately," he added. The remarks came days after Iran's oil minister urged citizens to reduce fuel consumption following damage to energy facilities during the conflict.

The Israeli military said it launched interceptors at several suspected aerial targets in northern Israel after alerts warned of possible aircraft intrusions in multiple areas. According to the military, contact was later lost with the targets, and further checks were underway following the incident.

Hezbollah chief Naim Qassem has urged the Lebanese government to reverse what he described as efforts to "criminalise the resistance", while condemning recent US sanctions targeting individuals linked to the group.

Speaking in remarks carried by Lebanon's National News Agency, Qassem said the sanctions "will only strengthen our resolve" and criticised Lebanese authorities for failing to oppose the measures. The Hezbollah secretary-general also accused Israel of seeking to occupy Lebanon, warning that the group would continue resisting Israeli actions in the region.

Iran's Tasnim news agency said disagreements between Tehran and Washington still remain over several clauses in the proposed agreement, including the issue of releasing Iran's blocked assets. According to Tasnim, continued US "obstruction" on some parts of the deal means there is still a possibility that the agreement could collapse despite recent progress in negotiations.

The death toll from Israeli attacks across Lebanon since March 2 has risen to 3,151, according to Lebanon's Health Ministry. The ministry said another 9,571 people have been wounded in the strikes, according to a statement carried by the country’s National News Agency.

Oman's Foreign Minister Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi met Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi in Muscat, where the Iranian official delivered what Oman's state news agency described as "a verbal message" from Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.

The meeting also focused on ongoing Pakistan-mediated talks between Tehran and Washington, including efforts aimed at restoring freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz amid regional tensions.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he spoke with US President Donald Trump and both leaders agreed that any future agreement with Iran must completely remove what he described as the "nuclear danger".

In a post on X, Netanyahu said the deal must involve dismantling Iran’s uranium enrichment facilities and removing enriched nuclear material from Iranian territory.

"That means dismantling Iran’s nuclear enrichment sites and removing its enriched nuclear material from its territory," Netanyahu wrote.

"My policy, like President Trump’s, remains unchanged: Iran will not have nuclear weapons," he added.

The remarks came a day after Trump claimed that a potential agreement with Iran had already been "largely negotiated".

The Israeli military has issued fresh forced displacement orders for residents in at least six more towns and villages in southern Lebanon, warning that the areas would soon come under attack. In a post on X in Arabic, Israeli army spokesperson Avichay Adraee instructed civilians to leave immediately and move at least 1,000 metres away towards open areas.

The warning came just hours after Israel issued a similar evacuation order covering 10 other villages in southern Lebanon. Israeli air strikes were reported both before and after the earlier warning.

"In last night's conversation with President Trump, the Prime Minister emphasized that Israel will maintain freedom of action against threats in all arenas, including Lebanon, and President Trump reiterated and supported this principle," the Israeli political source told Reuters.

Trump had earlier said the US and Iran had "largely negotiated" a memorandum of understanding aimed at restoring shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.

US President Donald Trump said any potential agreement with Iran depends entirely on his decision, insisting that only "good news" would come from the negotiations because he does not "make bad deals".

As reports of a potential deal between Tehran and Washington emerged, Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency said disagreements over two or three clauses still remain. A source in Iran familiar with the negotiations told Tasnim that if the US continues creating obstacles, there would be “no possibility of finalising the memorandum of understanding”.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Sunday welcomed signs of progress in talks over a possible peace deal between the United States and Iran.

"I welcome the progress towards an agreement between the US and Iran. We need a deal that truly de-escalates the conflict, reopens the Strait of Hormuz and guarantees toll-free full freedom of navigation. Iran must not be allowed to develop a nuclear weapon," von der Leyen wrote on X.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated on Sunday that any potential agreement between the United States and Iran must guarantee the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz with unconditional and unrestricted freedom of navigation.

Welcoming the progress made toward a deal, Starmer expressed on X that a final agreement must effectively end the conflict while securing vital maritime pathways. Additionally, he emphasised that Iran must never be permitted to develop a nuclear weapon, affirming Britain's commitment to collaborating with international partners to achieve a long-term diplomatic resolution.

Iran and the United States are still not happy with each other over the clauses of the truce memorandum. As a Reuters report suggests, Iran has not accepted one/two demands of the MoU.

IRGC-linked Tasnim News reported on Sunday that Iran has not accepted any action on the nuclear issue at this stage of talks with the United States. According to the report, a possible initial memorandum of understanding could include a U.S. commitment to waive Iranian oil sanctions during the negotiation period, allowing Tehran to sell oil without sanctions-related limits. The potential memorandum of understanding would also emphasise an end to the war on all fronts, including Lebanon. The report added that the draft would set 30 days for steps related to the Strait of Hormuz, alongside 60 days for nuclear talks.

IRGC-linked Tasnim News reported on Sunday that Iran has insisted that any initial memorandum of understanding with the United States must include the release of at least part of its frozen assets in the first step.

The report stated that Tehran has stressed that these released funds must be immediately accessible to Iran. It added that while Washington had sought in recent weeks to link the release of the assets to a possible final nuclear agreement, Iran wants part of the funds released at the start of any memorandum of understanding alongside a set mechanism for releasing the remaining assets during the negotiations.

The United States and Iran are negotiating a 60-day memorandum of understanding that would reopen the strategic Strait of Hormuz, resume Iranian oil exports, and initiate a new round of nuclear talks, Axios reported on Saturday, citing a senior U.S. official and sources familiar with the draft. Under the proposed framework, Iran would clear mines in the strait to restore free commercial shipping, while the U.S. would lift its blockade on Iranian ports and issue limited sanctions waivers. This economic relief would operate under a strict "relief for performance" model, tying Washington's concessions directly to verifiable steps taken by Tehran.

The draft agreement outlines significant nuclear commitments, with Iran pledging not to pursue nuclear weapons, while agreeing to negotiate limits on uranium enrichment and the removal of its highly enriched uranium stockpile. In return, Washington would agree to negotiate broader sanctions relief and the unfreezing of Iranian funds during the 60-day window, though these permanent measures would only take effect as part of a final, verifiably implemented pact. Furthermore, U.S. military forces mobilised to the region in recent months would remain in place throughout this interim phase, with any potential withdrawal contingent upon securing a final deal. Adding a broader regional dimension to the diplomatic breakthrough, the memorandum also envisions a path toward ending the war between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon.

Lebanon's health authorities said Saturday that the death toll from Israeli attacks since March 2 has climbed to 3,123, with 9,506 others wounded.

Lebanon's Public Health Emergency Operations Center said 25 medical, nursing, and administrative staff members at Hiram Hospital in the Tyre district were wounded after Israeli strikes hit near the facility, causing severe damage.

The centre said it was the second time in less than two months the hospital had been struck, calling the attacks a violation of international humanitarian law protecting health facilities.

Israel continued to intensify military operations in southern Lebanon recently.

On Saturday, at least 15 residential areas were hit by Israeli airstrikes, and a military camp in Nabatieh was attacked, leaving one Lebanese soldier injured.

According to a statement released by the Israeli military on Saturday, one Israeli soldier was killed and two others were injured while on duty in the northern Lebanon on Saturday.

On Saturday, a spokesperson for the Iranian Foreign Ministry strongly condemned the Israeli military attacks, called on the international community to take immediate action to stop Israel's crimes, and reaffirmed that Iran stands firmly with Lebanon.

A 10-day ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon took effect at midnight on April 17.

Despite the truce, Israel has carried out strikes in Lebanon, while Hezbollah also launched attacks on northern Israel and Israeli military positions in southern Lebanon.

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has congratulated US President Donald Trump on his "extraordinary efforts to pursue peace," following a high-level telephone call between the two nations.

In a notable diplomatic move, Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff, Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, represented the country during the official conversation with the American President.

Reaffirming Islamabad's commitment to regional stability, Prime Minister Sharif stated that Pakistan will continue its peace efforts with the "utmost sincerity." He added that the country looks forward to hosting the next round of peace talks in the very near future.

Iran has agreed to give up its enriched uranium as per the latest peace talks between Washington and Tehran, multiple US officials, close to the development told Reuters and the New York Times.

Iran’s semi-official Fars News Agency, quoting the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, said no commitments had been made on Tehran’s nuclear programme during ongoing negotiations with the United States.

The report dismissed Trump's latest social media post as “propaganda” aimed at a domestic audience.

“It is worth mentioning that Trump had previously announced negotiations about Iran’s nuclear programme as one of the main and inseparable conditions of any agreement. However, no commitment has been made by Iran, and the nuclear issue has not been discussed at this stage,” Fars said.

The agency further claimed that American officials had privately acknowledged Trump’s posts were primarily intended for “promotional and media consumption purposes” inside the United States.

“It is noted that American officials have admitted in multiple messages to Iran that Trump’s tweets are mostly for promotional and media consumption purposes within the United States, and have advised not to pay attention to these statements,” the report added.

US President Donald Trump on Saturday said a peace agreement with Iran had been “largely negotiated”, adding that the Strait of Hormuz would reopen as part of the proposed deal.

Former Israeli defence minister Avigdor Lieberman has sharply criticised Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over ongoing US-led negotiations with Iran, accusing the government of weakening Israel’s position and allowing Tehran to emerge stronger.

Speaking to Channel 12’s Meet the Press, Lieberman warned that any agreement preserving Iran’s current leadership would amount to a strategic failure for Israel.

“Any agreement from our point of view is a catastrophe, because any agreement leaves the ayatollahs in power,” he said.

The leader of the right-wing Yisrael Beiteinu party also criticised reports that a possible deal could involve the release of approximately $110 billion in frozen Iranian assets and permit Tehran to resume unrestricted oil and gas exports.

Lieberman argued that such concessions would significantly strengthen Iran economically and politically while undermining Israeli security concerns.

He further accused US President Donald Trump of sidelining Israel during negotiations and claimed Netanyahu had failed to prevent it.

Asked about Washington’s handling of the talks, Lieberman said Trump had humiliated Israel “with Netanyahu’s blessing."

Iran’s ambassador to Pakistan, Reza Amiri Moghadam, said there were grounds for “conservative optimism” following recent negotiations with the United States, provided all sides remained committed to the diplomatic process.

Speaking after returning to Tehran, Moghadam said discussions with Iranian officials had centred on what he described as the progress achieved through the talks.

He credited Iran’s negotiating position to what he called the country’s “dignity,” the resolve of its armed forces, and public resistance, while also acknowledging Pakistan’s role in facilitating dialogue between the two sides.

Moghadam described Islamabad’s mediation efforts as constructive and praised the initiatives undertaken by Pakistani officials during the talks.
 

Iran will hold its pre-World Cup training camp in Mexico instead of the United States after receiving approval from FIFA to relocate the team base ahead of next year’s tournament.

Iranian Football Federation president Mehdi Taj said the national squad will now prepare in the border city of Tijuana, located near the Pacific coast and close to the US frontier.

According to Iranian state media, FIFA accepted Tehran’s request to move the camp amid ongoing concerns surrounding travel logistics and security arrangements linked to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The tournament, scheduled from June 11 to July 19, will be jointly hosted by United States, Canada and Mexico.
 

Iran and Pakistan have presented a revised proposal to the United States aimed at ending the war and reopening the Strait of Hormuz, according to two Pakistani sources familiar with the negotiations.

The sources said the US is expected to respond to the proposal by Sunday.

Lebanon’s National News Agency said Israeli forces targeted a civil defence team in the village of Kafraiya while it was carrying out a rescue operation to recover casualties from an earlier Israeli attack. The report said several rescuers were injured in the strike, but did not specify the number of casualties.
