Senior lawyer run over by SUV in Hyderabad, police scan CCTV for leads

Senior advocate Khaza Moizuddin was killed after he was allegedly run over by unidentified assailants in an SUV outside his residence at Masab Tank in Hyderabad on Saturday.

The 63-year-old lawyer was about to get into his car when the SUV, reportedly without a number plate, hit him. He was rushed to a hospital, where he succumbed to injuries during treatment.

Hyderabad Police have intensified the investigation into the killing and formed special teams to probe the case. Police are analysing technical evidence, including CCTV footage and call data records (CDR), as part of the investigation.

"No one has been taken into custody. We are investigating. In the course of investigation, many (people) are being questioned including those (whose names were) mentioned in the complaint," a senior police official told PTI.

The CCTV footage of the incident shows the lawyer opening the door of his car as the speeding SUV mows him down without giving anytime to the lawyer to get aside.

Police said they identified the vehicle owner, but declined to comment on the reports that the vehicle had been sold to another person.

Based on a complaint, a murder case was registered.

The victim's son said his father was fighting against encroachment and the grabbing of waqf properties by certain persons, who, he alleged, were behind the incident.

He further claimed that five attempts had earlier been made on his father’s life and alleged that the accused had threatened him to persuade his father to stop pursuing the cases.

The son also said that the persons named by him should be held responsible if anything happens to him or other members of the family.
