India Today Conclave 2018: No issues with Rahul visiting his grandmother, says Sonia Gandhi

Former Congress president Sonia Gandhi has defended her son and Congress president Rahul Gandhi, who is under attack from several quarters after he travelled to Italy to see his grandmother on Holi following elections in three Northeastern states.

The Congress did not do well in the three assembly elections and lost power in Meghalaya even after emerging as the single largest party. Rahul Gandhi was criticised for his foreign tour as the other parties got into consultations for government formation soon after the election was over in Meghalaya.

But Sonia Gandhi defended Rahul saying, "Yes, he went to see his grandmother but he went there after doing complete electioneering. When he went electioneering was over. It was a period of three-four days when you wait for election results."

Video: Vijay takes oath as Tamil Nadu CM amid loud cheers and chants

TVK leader C Joseph Vijay on Sunday took oath as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu amid a sea of supporters, his friends and family, and several political leaders. Eight other TVK leaders were sworn in besides him, as ministers in the new government. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also attended the ceremony. The TVK managed to secure the Governor's nod to form the government after the Congress, the CPI, the CPI(M), the VCK, and IUML extended their support to the Vijay-led party for a colaition government.
