CBSE says no marking portal breach, claims hacker targeted dummy platform

CBSE has denied claims made by a 19-year-old over alleged vulnerabilities in its evaluation system, saying the cited portal was only a testing site with sample data and was not linked to the original platform used for assessment work.

Evaluation portal not compromised, targeted site only has test data: CBSE rejects security breach

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has rejected the claims referring to a security breach in its On-Screen Marking (OSM) evaluation system, clarifying that a URL mentioned in social media posts was only a testing platform containing sample data and not the portal used for actual assessment work.

The clarification comes after online claims by a 19-year-old who gave Class 12 exams this year suggested that a CBSE digital evaluation portal had been compromised earlier this year. The allegations also became part of discussions surrounding concerns over CBSE’s post-result processes and the newly introduced OSM mechanism.

In an official statement, CBSE said posts circulating on social media referred to the URL cbse.onmarks.co.in, with claims that it had been accessed or compromised in February 2026.

The board, however, stated that the portal mentioned was not used for evaluation of answer sheets.

“At the outset, it is clarified that the portal used for evaluation of answer-books bore a different URL, which has neither been compromised nor has the vulnerabilities indicated in the social media post,” CBSE said.

According to the board, the cited URL was only a testing site used internally for review purposes and contained sample data, not real student records, marks or evaluation details.

CBSE said there were no actual evaluation data, marks or student information stored on that portal. It further added that no security breach has been detected in the system used for real evaluation work.

The clarification comes amid wider scrutiny around CBSE’s result and re-evaluation processes, with some students alleging discrepancies in scanned answer sheets and raising concerns over transparency in post-result mechanisms.

Defending the OSM system, CBSE said the platform was introduced to improve transparency in assessments and includes grievance redressal mechanisms for students.

“The Board would reassure all concerned about the safeguards implemented to ensure the integrity of the platform actually deployed,” the statement said.

CBSE maintained that strong security measures are in place in the operational evaluation system and said no vulnerabilities affecting actual assessment processes have been reported.

The OSM mechanism was introduced by CBSE this year as part of efforts to digitise evaluation processes. However, the system has recently come under discussion following student complaints linked to answer sheet access and re-evaluation procedures.
