Ranveer Singh's Dhurandhar 2 is still churning numbers at the Indian box office.

Dhurandhar: The Revenge, the second film in director Aditya Dhar’s franchise, has begun streaming internationally on Netflix in a raw and uncut version. The Ranveer Singh-starrer started streaming from May 14, eight weeks after its theatrical release. In India, the film is yet to arrive on streaming and will release online on JioHotstar.

The OTT version has drawn attention because viewers say it is more visceral, raw and gory than the version shown in theatres. People who watched the film overseas, including in the US, have been posting on social media about scenes that are longer, more explicit and free of the muting and censoring seen in the theatrical cut.

What is different in the OTT version

Among the scenes being discussed are several violent stretches that appear in a more extended form. In the opening sequence of Jaskirat’s rampage, the moment in which he bashes a man with a hammer has reportedly not been cut.

In the climax, the shot in which Ranveer’s character crushes a man’s head with a cement block also reportedly remains intact. In the Lyari Gang War episode, a sequence showing Jaskirat, also known as Hamza, hitting a man with a burning fireball is reportedly longer than it was in theatres.

Another change viewers have pointed to is the treatment of abusive language and cuss words. The theatrical version had been criticised for selectively muting or censoring them. In the uncut version, the dialogue can reportedly be heard without muting or censoring. Viewers have also said the subtitles translate most of the abuses correctly.

Arshad Pappu’s beheading by Uzair Baloch was already one of the film’s most graphic scenes in theatres, and that sequence reportedly remains in the OTT version. But some additional moments have also been noticed.

Another scene that had only been hinted at in theatres is shown more directly on OTT. The film shows Uzair, played by Danish Pandor, playing football with Arshad Pappu’s severed head after killing him. Viewers have also pointed out that the sequence includes another shot of Uzair at the end of the scene, which had previously appeared in the trailer.

Release and cast

Directed by Aditya Dhar, Dhurandhar 2 stars Ranveer Singh as an Indian spy in Karachi. The cast also includes Arjun Rampal, R Madhavan, Sanjay Dutt, Rakesh Bedi and Sara Arjun. The first part, released last year, also featured Akshaye Khanna as the antagonist.

The film has smashed box office records to emerge as an all-time blockbuster.
