Actor Sai Tamhankar, who will soon be seen in Matka King, says the way women are written on screen today feels very different from before and in the best way. In an exclusive conversation with India Today, she spoke about how female characters, especially in crime dramas, are no longer pushed to the sidelines but are finally getting their due as complex, central figures.

Talking about this shift, Tamhankar pointed out that it’s not just limited to one genre, but something that’s happening across the industry. She pointed out how women are no longer mere spectators in narratives driven by action or conflict.

"I honestly think there’s been a big shift. Women aren’t observers in anything anymore, and that change is for the better. We’re getting meatier, more interesting characters, with so much more to explore across different genres," she said.

"That era, when women were just ornamental, is gone. This is a very positive change, and I feel glad to be witnessing it, living it, and experiencing it," she added, underlining how the industry is opening up space for more meaningful representation.

At the same time, speaking about how she wishes to be perceived as an actor, the actor said, "To be very honest, I’d like to be known as — 'yeh ladki toh pagal hai (this girl is crazy)' in a good sense. She’s mad. When she comes on screen, she’s mad."

She emphasised that, for her, the process matters as much as the outcome. “Sometimes we get too focused on the destination, when the journey itself is so fulfilling. Right now, I’m really enjoying that journey. I’m in no rush, and I’m loving the kind of work I’m getting,” Tamhankar added.

Calling her latest project a rewarding experience, Tamhankar highlighted the collaborative energy on set. “This project, especially, is a wonderful ensemble—with great people and a great team. I feel very fortunate to be here and to be a part of it,” the actor said.
