Dr Puneeth B. S, Consultant - Medical Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist at Manipal Hospital, Malleswaram, says there has been a noticeable spike in patients complaining of gut issues in recent weeks.

According to him, cases of stomach infections and digestive discomfort have gone up by nearly 20%, closely following the temperature rise.

From mild indigestion to severe infections, the summer heat is putting extra stress on the gut. This makes it important to understand the risks and take preventive steps early.

WHAT DOCTORS ARE SEEING MORE THIS SUMMER

Healthcare experts are noticing a rise in several common but uncomfortable conditions. These include acute gastroenteritis (diarrhoea and vomiting), food poisoning, bloating, constipation, indigestion, and even loss of appetite.

Older adults are particularly vulnerable. Dehydration in high heat can lead to electrolyte imbalance, causing dizziness, weakness, and even low blood pressure. Doctors warn that such symptoms should not be ignored.

Another growing concern is anorectal problems like fissures and piles (haemorrhoids). These are often triggered by dehydration and hard stools, which become more common in hot weather.

WHY HEATWAVES ARE TRIGGERING GUT PROBLEMS

There are several reasons why digestive issues increase during summer:

  • Faster food spoilage: High temperatures make it easier for bacteria to grow in food, increasing the risk of food poisoning.

  • Unsafe water sources: Water stored in tanks or supplied through tankers may carry bacteria and viruses, leading to infections.

  • Eating out more often: Street food, cut fruits, and cold beverages may not always be prepared hygienically.

  • Dehydration: Not drinking enough water can slow digestion, cause constipation, and lead to weakness.

While many stomach issues may resolve on their own, some symptoms require medical attention. Doctors recommend evaluation if there is persistent diarrhoea, dehydration, or severe weakness.

Basic tests may include blood tests such as complete blood count, serum electrolytes, and kidney function tests. In cases where diarrhoea continues, stool tests may be advised. Severe or long-term cases might need further investigation, like endoscopy or colonoscopy.

Preventing gut issues during heatwaves is simple but requires consistency:

  • Eat freshly cooked, hot meals and avoid leftovers

Doctors also strongly advise against self-medication, especially antibiotics, as it can worsen the condition instead of treating it.
