Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Ratna Debnath, the mother of the RG Kar rape-murder victim, hailed the "people of Sonarpur" for the physical attack that Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee faced last week, saying "everyone must get the consequences of their action."

Speaking to the media on Monday, the newly elected legislator said, "I would like to thank the people of Sonarpur for taking the initiative to take care of Abhishek Banerjee's skin and hair and make them silky [by throwing eggs]."

Abhishek was attacked during his visit to Sonarpur near Kolkata, where he had gone to meet the families of alleged victims of post-poll violence. Scores of people threw stones and eggs at the TMC national general secretary and raised chants of "chor, chor" as he escaped the mob wearing a cricket helmet and with help from his aides and the police.

Debnath also asserted that the defeat suffered by the TMC in the recent West Bengal Assembly elections ensured that the socio-cultural identity of Bengalis is safeguarded.

"If Trinamool Congress had won this time, would they have allowed us to remain as Bengalis? There would have been no end to the bloodshed," she stated.

'THEY SNATCHED EVERYTHING FROM ME'

She also lamented the loss of her daughter while lashing out at Abhishek and his aunt, TMC supremo and former chief minister Mamata Banerjee.

"They both, aunt and nephew, have snatched everything from me. I don't know how much peace my daughter's soul will find. Because none of my daughter's dreams have come true," the BJP MLA said.

On the intervening night of August 8 and 9, 2024, Debnath's daughter, a 31-year-old post-graduate trainee resident doctor on duty, was raped, tortured and murdered inside the seminar room of the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

There have been allegations that evidence was destroyed and attempts were made to downplay the incident in its immediate aftermath.

Debnath said, "I am at least a little relieved that I have been able to bring down the 'Hirak Rani' of Nabanna (state secretariat) and I am moving little by little towards the goal that I had said that I would bring her down by grabbing her hair."

"Hirak Rani" is a political moniker that the BJP used to refer to Mamata when she was in power, to compare her to the ruthless dictator from Satyajit Ray's legendary film, 'Hirak Rajar Deshe.'
