In an official statement, the CMO Tamil Nadu mentioned, "The increase will benefit about 16 lakh employees, teachers and pensioners at an additional cost of Rs 1,230 to the state exchequer."

The statement also stressed how important government employees and teachers are in playing a key role in framing and executing such initiatives effectively. Vijay has also showed his keen interest in introducing as well as implementing various welfare schemes for the common people of the state. He ensured that his administration would be a 'government of common people' and they will work hard to ensure a situation of 'social justice, equal opportunity and secularism' in the state.

Previously, Vijay had also announced that the May 2026 instalment of the Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thogai – the Women's Rights Grant – of Rs 1,000 per beneficiary will soon be credited to bank accounts.

The scheme, originally launched by the previous administration – headed by DMK, will undergo restructuring, but it will also ensure the continuity of grants for 1.31 crore recipients that are there currently.

The announcements were made after Vijay, with his government, had a review meeting regarding the current financial position of the Tamil Nadu Government and the functioning of the Finance Department was held at the Chief Secretariat.

Vijay alsohad a review meeting chaired focusing on the Department of Industry, Investment Promotion, and Commerce at the Tamil Nadu Secretariat.

With this move to raise dearness allowance (DA), Tamil Nadu has aligned its DA structure with the Centre’s revision, extending the benefit to state employees and pensioners. States often follow Central DA hikes, though the timing and extent of implementation vary.

Employee unions and pensioners’ associations have welcomed the move, saying the hike will offer relief amid rising living costs and inflation. With retrospective effect from January 1, 2026, beneficiaries will also receive arrears for the intervening period. Detailed government orders on disbursement are awaited.
