A controversy has erupted in Tamil Nadu after a video from a meeting between Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay and representatives of associations for persons with disabilities was allegedly recorded and shared as a social media reel by a government official.

The issue gained attention after claims surfaced online that an official present at the meeting held at the Tamil Nadu Secretariat in Chennai had filmed the interaction and uploaded it on social media, triggering criticism over the use of official spaces for promotional content.

However, clarifications later emerged denying the allegations against government officials.

A Tamil news graphic shared in the comment section raised questions over whether a government official had recorded and uploaded the footage as a social media reel.

The clip quickly went viral on social media, drawing mixed reactions from users. While some praised the interaction as a sign of transparency and accessibility, others questioned whether such moments should be publicly circulated online.

According to information shared by those associated with the event, the person who recorded the video was not a government officer but Dr P Simmachandran, a prominent social worker and advocate for the rights of differently-abled people in Tamil Nadu. He serves as the President of the Tamil Nadu Differently Abled Federation Charitable Trust (TNDFCT).

Dr Simmachandran reportedly stated that the video was recorded only after obtaining Vijay’s permission. He also clarified that the footage was taken in connection with the meeting involving disability rights groups and was later shared online.

The incident has sparked widespread political debate on social media, especially as Vijay continues to draw significant public attention after assuming office as Tamil Nadu Chief Minister. The viral video has intensified discussions about transparency in governance and the growing use of social media content from official meetings.

Supporters described the footage as a reflection of Vijay’s accessibility and openness towards the public, while critics argued that such recordings risk turning formal government interactions into publicity-oriented content. The episode has further highlighted the blurred line between political communication and administrative functioning in the digital era.
