'Calicut land' was last message from pilot: Survivors recall moments before Air India crash

As many as 18 people, including both the pilots, were killed after an Air India Express plane returning from Dubai skidded off the runway and broke in two while landing at Kerala's Kozhikode on Friday. The Air India Express flight was carrying 190 people, including 6 crew members. Air India Express has announced a compensation of up to Rs 10 lakh for the families of passengers killed in the tragedy. India Today exclusively reached out three passengers who survived the plane crash.

The pilot-in-command Captain Deepak Sathe and his co-pilot Akhilesh Kumar were among those who died in the crash, police and airline officials said. Sathe was a former Wing Commander of the Indian Air Force (IAF) and had served at the force's flight testing establishment. "Unfortunately the pilots have passed away and we are in touch with their families in grief," said an Air India Express statement past midnight. The Civil Aviation Ministry said the Boeing 737 aircraft on a flight from Dubai to Kozhikode overshot the runway at Kozhikode airport at 7.41 PM on Friday.
