Belgium Supreme Court Dismisses Mehul Choksi's Appeal Against Extradition to India

In a major boost to India's efforts to bring back fugitive economic offenders, Belgium's Supreme Court has dismissed Mehul Choksi's appeal against his extradition. The Court of Cassation's ruling upholds the earlier decision by the Antwerp Court of Appeal (referred to as Angkor in the transcript), which found the extradition order 'enforceable'. Choksi, wanted in the multi-crore Punjab National Bank (PNB) scam, had challenged the order after being arrested in Belgium. The report notes that Choksi has been fighting these proceedings since 2018. Additionally, a special court in Mumbai recently rejected his plea to stop proceedings declaring him a Fugitive Economic Offender (FEO). This development marks a significant step in India's crackdown on fugitives like Vijay Mallya and Nirav Modi.
