Portraits displayed at the Martyrs' Exhibition : plov for a land grab?
Two years ago, Ramble, a popular, ritzy, open-air restaurant situated in the hub centre of Delhi's Connaught Place, was abruptly closed down and the prized plot measuring 500 sq metre was cordoned off by its owners, the New Delhi Municipal Committee (NDMC). For a long time the site wore a mysteriously desolate look and public speculation on its future shot off in many directions.

Since the land fell within the charmed circle of Connaught Circus with its stringent regulations on new constructions, high-rise buildings were quickly ruled out. The options seemed to be a parallel Palika Bazar (the adjoining underground market) or a parking lot to ease the strain on the capital's burgeoning shopping centre. What sprouted instead, after nearly two years of Ramble's 'removal', is a totally tented affair which, according to a press release, is "to memorise that Exhibition of 300 Portraits of the Martyrs."
