In an interview in Nagpur to </i>India Today's<i> </i>Ramanswamy<i> he spoke of his reasons for the crackdown on the long march leaders and on related sues. Excerpts:</i><br><b><br>On the farmers march:</b>It is 100 per cent political. I have no sympathy for these leaders. After I arrested them they called for a bandh which flopped. They have no standing with the people.<br><br><b>On Sharad Pawar:</b>He has no knowledge of law. He claims I arrested him and his friends under the new ordinance against communal, anti-social and other dangerous activity. In fact if I had had him held under that there would have been no obligation to produce him before a magistrate within 24 hours. I could keep him in for three weeks without giving any reasons. Not a single political worker has been arrested under that ordinance during the six months that I have been in power.<br><b><br>On the reasons for his crackdown:</b>"There is absolutely no question in my mind about what their designs were. They would have come to Nagpur and created disturbances before the Legislature -  would be failing in my duty as chief minister if I knowingly allowed them to do that.<br><br><b>On his performance as chief minister: </b>No government has done better than mine. No chief minister has been as effective as I have.<br><br><b>On Sharad Joshi's credentials:</b>He came to me with reasonable demands and I said I would do what I could. I will take him to meet Rao Birendra Singh (Union agriculture minister). I do not bother about credentials. 1 am willing to talk to any reasonable person.<br><br><b>On preventive detention:</b>I do not know what all this fuss is about .The concept of preventive detention is self-explanatory. What is the point in waiting for someone to commit a crime before arresting him? If you have authentic information that he is likely to violate the law. it is better to pre-empt that by taking him into preventive custody.<br><b><br>On Sanjay Gandhi:</b>I admired Sanjay and his way of getting things done. Everybody would want to be like him, only they do not have the guts. I am fearless. TVK leader C Joseph Vijay on Sunday took oath as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu amid a sea of supporters, his friends and family, and several political leaders. Eight other TVK leaders were sworn in besides him, as ministers in the new government. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also attended the ceremony. The TVK managed to secure the Governor's nod to form the government after the Congress, the CPI, the CPI(M), the VCK, and IUML extended their support to the Vijay-led party for a colaition government.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday hugged and honoured 98-year-old Makhanlal Sarkar, one of the earliest and senior most members of the BJP. The scene unfolded on the stage ahead of Suvendu Adhikari's swearing-in as West Bengal's Chief Minister in Kolkata. PM Modi also touched Sarkar's feet and presented a shawl to him as a mark of respect. In 1952, Sarkar was arrested in Kashmir while he was accompanying Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee as the latter was marching to hoist the tricolour there. BJP IT cell head Amit Malviya described the elderly party leader as "one of the earliest grassroots figures associated with the nationalist movement in post-Independence India."
