Patriot in censor limbo over villain name resembling a politician's son
Mohanlal and Mammootty's Patriot has now encountered issues with the Censor Board over a character's name resembling a politician's son. The film has been re-edited and resubmitted ahead of its May 1 theatrical release.

Malayalam superstars Mammootty and Mohanlal's upcoming film, Patriot, directed by Mahesh Narayanan, has encountered a setback with the Censor Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The board has instructed changes to the villain's name due to its resemblance to the name of a prominent politician's son.
According to a Mathrubhumi report, this decision has led to the removal of certain scenes and names in the political thriller, which were considered potentially controversial.
The production team has reportedly completed the re-editing process at Lal Media Studio in Kochi and is preparing to resubmit the film.
With these modifications, Patriot is expected to receive the censor certificate from the board ahead of its May 1 release.
Earlier, the film was slated to hit theatres on April 23. However, the makers decided to postpone the film's release due to unforeseen circumstances.
Patriot, one of the most anticipated Malayalam films of 2026, brings Mohanlal and Mammootty together on screen after 18 years. The two legends will share the screen with prominent actors including Fahadh Faasil, Kunchacko Boban, Nayanthara and several other actors from the Malayalam film industry.
The film is a spy action drama centred around a controversial intelligence mission which carries serious consequences. With high-stakes drama and action sequences, Patriot is expected to be a full-fledged commercial drama.
The music and background score for the film are composed by Sushin Shyam.
