Has the controversy affected the film's performance?
The box-office update comes amid discussions surrounding the portrayal of Janhvi Kapoor's character, Achiyamma. While several viewers praised the film's themes and performances, criticism emerged online over what some described as the hypersexualisation of the character.
Responding to the feedback, director Buchi Babu Sana issued a statement on X on June 5, saying the concerns had been heard and that changes would be made to the film's theatrical version. He also apologised to viewers who felt uncomfortable with certain scenes.
What is Peddi about?
Set in rural Andhra Pradesh, Peddi follows the journey of its titular protagonist, played by Ram Charan, as he uses sport to carve out an identity for himself and his community. The film features cricket, kushti (wrestling) and sprinting as key elements of the narrative.
Directed by Buchi Babu Sana, the film is produced by Venkata Satish Kilaru under Vriddhi Cinemas and stars Janhvi Kapoor, Shiva Rajkumar and Jagapathi Babu in pivotal roles. Released across 3,000 screens, the film had recorded advance bookings worth Rs 20 crore on its opening day, setting the stage for a strong box-office run.
The film was released in theatres on June 4.
