After films like The Kashmir Files and The Bengal Files, another “Files” title is set to hit theatres — but this one is not backed by filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri. The trailer of the Marathi film The Maharashtra Files was unveiled on May 18, offering a glimpse into a politically charged drama centred on corruption, land acquisition and the abuse of power.

Directed by Sanjivkumar Rathod, the film is scheduled to release in theatres on May 29, 2026.

What is in the trailer

The nearly three-minute trailer paints a grim picture of systemic corruption and the widening gap between the powerful and the powerless. At the heart of the story is a proposed 40-km four-lane national highway project, which becomes the trigger for a larger political and social conflict. Farmers are seen fighting to protect their lands as politicians, officials, and influential businessmen manipulate the system for personal gain.

The trailer hints at an organised land grab carried out in the name of development, with repeated references to unfair compensation, misuse of authority, and suspicious deaths. Several scenes focus on the anger and helplessness of farmers and labourers who appear determined to unite against a deeply entrenched system.

One of the dialogues in the trailer questions how those in power continue to amass wealth while ordinary citizens struggle for survival, setting the tone for what promises to be a hard-hitting political thriller.

About the film

The Maharashtra Files features an ensemble cast including Mangesh Desai, Usha Nadkarni, Sayaji Shinde and Nagesh Bhosale. The film also includes appearances by Sunny Leone, Sapna Chaudhary and Gautami Patil.

Overall, The Maharashtra Files sets up a political drama around alleged corruption, disputed land acquisition, unequal treatment of farmers and industrialists, and questions over power and justice, with the story anchored in a highway project and its fallout.
