Hours after Priyanka Gandhi announced that Congress will reserve 40 per cent seats for women candidates in UP, Rahul Gandhi said his party will continue to stand up for the rights of women in the country.

Uttar Pradesh has 403 assembly seats, 40 per cent of which makes more than 160 women candidates from the Congress party in the next year’s polls. In the 2017 Uttar Pradesh Assembly election, a record 38 women had become MLAs in the state.

As per the 2019 Lok Sabha election data, Uttar Pradesh had 6.61 crore registered women voters as against 7.79 men electors. This makes women’s share in Uttar Pradesh’s electorate at about 46 per cent.
