Candidates: Vaishali's slip-up throws title race open, will she hold her nerve?

Candidates 2026: Vaishali Rameshbabu had a golden chance to cement her lead and head into the final rest day of the Candidates 2026 tournament. But her 12th-round loss has ensured that there is everything to play for in the last two rounds, and her chances of featuring in the World Chess Championship have taken a bit of a jolt.

Sunday was a horror day for India when they faced China in other sports. In the Badminton Asian Championships, Ayush Shetty lost to world number two Shi Yu Qi in straight games. In the Candidates Chess tournament, China’s dominance over India continued.

Vaishali Rameshbabu, the sole leader in the women’s section of the Candidates, lost to Zhu Jiner and relinquished a golden chance. Divya Deshmukh, the other Indian in the fray, lost to Tan Zhongyi as she slipped to the bottom of the table.

Vaishali’s loss will hurt many Indian chess fans. With Praggnanandhaa’s chances officially over, and with Javokhir Sindarov just a draw away from the Candidates title, India’s hopes of good news from Cyprus are increasingly fading.

The equation was simple for Vaishali. Play a solid game and hold on to the lead. Now, she is in a four-way battle, not just with Zhu Jiner, but also with Anna Muzychuk and Bibisara Assaubayeva, for the right to face Ju Wenjun in the World Chess Championship.

In many ways, the women’s section of the Candidates has delivered a humdinger in 2026. Whoever wins this title will have come through one of the toughest tests of their career.

WHAT WENT WRONG FOR VAISHALI?

Before the start of the 12th round, Vaishali had lost only one game in the entire tournament, and that too to Zhu Jiner. Against Chinese opponents, she has struggled with their discipline and patience.

In Round 5, facing Zhu, Vaishali tried to counter the Italian Opening, but inaccuracies with the f5 pawn push and the move Nc5 allowed Zhu to take control of the middlegame and open up the centre.

In Round 12, she faced the Caro-Kann Defence. It is a complex structure for White, with Black focusing on maintaining a solid pawn structure along the c- and d-files.

While trying to stay aggressive, Vaishali needed to be precise. A blunder on c5 cost her the advantage. The situation worsened when she misplaced her rook on f1 and followed it up with questionable moves like Bd4 and Qh8, which eventually left her position beyond recovery.

In trying to hold her position, the pressure told, and Zhu completed a double over her in the Candidates.

VAISHALI'S GOLDEN CHANCE GONE?

With Bibisara Assaubayeva beating Kateryna Lagno, there is now just a half-point gap separating her from Zhu and Vaishali.

Vaishali also benefited from Alexandra Goryachkina holding Anna Muzychuk to a draw. Had Muzychuk converted her rook-and-king endgame, she would have been level on seven points with Vaishali and Zhu.

Throughout that game, the Ukrainian held a strong advantage. Despite being two pawns up, Goryachkina could not convert due to structural limitations. On move 65, the decision to give a Ra2 check allowed the advantage to slip, leaving her half a point behind the leaders.

Heading into the final two rounds, Vaishali faces Tan Zhongyi and Kateryna Lagno. She has had a decent record against both, but Zhu faces a tricky final-round encounter against Muzychuk.

The equation is simple for Vaishali. She must win both games and hope Zhu drops points. If she draws both, she will need Zhu to also drop points and hope that neither Muzychuk nor Bibisara overtakes her.

The margins are razor-thin. One slip could decide the title and the World Championship spot.

For India, the stakes are even higher. What once looked like a promising Candidates campaign is now on the brink of slipping away.
