Hi and welcome to India Today's Highlight coverage of the IPL 2026 clash between GT and CSK in Ahmedabad.
23:38 IST:
An exciting southern derby up next - Brace yourselves for another run-fest as two playoff-bound sides face off at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad. Sunrisers Hyderabad take on Royal Challengers Bengaluru and the first ball is scheduled to be bowled on Friday, 22nd May, at 7.30 pm IST (2 pm GMT). Our buildup will begin well in advance, so do tune in for that as well. Until then, we sign off, only to meet again. Take care, cheers!23:39 IST:
That's a wrap from Ahmedabad - An entertaining evening at the Narendra Modi Stadium, even if the contest itself was one-sided. Gujarat Titans end their league phase on a high, looking every bit an unstoppable force. They are now level with RCB on 18 points, sitting pretty in second spot, and with their net run rate boosted significantly by this 89-run win, a top-two finish looks almost confirmed. Chennai Super Kings, meanwhile, will have plenty to reflect on and will be eager to come back stronger next year, though there are positives to take from the season too.23:34 IST:
PLAYER OF THE MATCH - Mohammed Siraj, for his outstanding spell of bowling of 3/26 in 3 overs, receives the award. On his bowling, Siraj says the ball is coming out of his hand really well. He reveals he worked on himself and his release during the period he was sitting out at the World Cup, going back to his videos to rebuild his confidence. About his preparation, he shares that he practices with the new ball early on to get a feel for his rhythm before moving on to bowling yorkers for two to three overs. On his mindset, he says his goal in the Powerplay is to build pressure from his end and stay consistent with his areas, trusting that if he does that, Rabada will take wickets from the other end. When asked about his physical condition, he says his body is in great shape and he is feeling well.23:35 IST:
The victorious captain of the Gujarat Titans - Shubhman Gill is all smiles. He says that it is important to take the winning momentum into the playoffs. Adds that even in the first couple of games, they were pretty close, but it was about getting over the line and they got that in the Delhi game. Gill mentions that their bowlers hit the right lengths consistently. You will get hit but it is about backing your plans. Says that their catching was much better and hopes that it continues. Tells that emotions does come out in a high-intensity game like this. Shares that his neck is fine. Reckons that they need to maintain the intent and impact in the playoffs as well. Last season after 12 games, they were top but lost the last two games. Shares that they haven't done much different this season and has been consistently in the top two. He is grateful to the fans who turned up to support them. Admits that sides like CSK and RCB will always have an edge in terms of fanbases, nothing will change that.23:20 IST:
... Time for the post-match Presentation ...23:21 IST:
GT's top three boss it up once again - Another day, another Gujarat Titans masterclass built on the same trusted template. Shubman Gill came out blazing to give GT a flying start while Sai Sudharsan settled into the supporting role alongside him. Once the Powerplay ended, both shifted gears beautifully, boundaries flowing from both ends as they brought up their fifties and stitched together another century opening stand. Gill's dismissal brought Jos Buttler to the crease and he slotted in seamlessly, combining brilliantly with Sudharsan to add yet another big partnership that put the game firmly beyond CSK's reach. All three crossed fifty, with Sudharsan leading the way with a superb 84 as GT powered to a daunting 229. CSK struggled to create inroads throughout, getting hit off their lengths early while Noor, the only spinner, found no purchase. The pacers went wide and full in the death overs, but managed only mixed returns. Gurjapneet offered the most control with the ball and Johnson closed out well at the death, though the over-rate penalty in the final two overs stung them late.23:28 IST:
Outbowled in the chase - GT lost just four wickets across their entire innings, and in stark contrast, CSK's top four lasted only 31 balls between them. Gaikwad, Matthew Short and Kartik Sharma offered brief cameos but the GT bowlers were simply too hot to handle, bowling better lengths and giving nothing away. Siraj wreaked havoc with three wickets in his first spell while Rabada cranked it up consistently past 150 kph, and CSK were reduced to 63/5 and staring down the barrel. Dube, dropped by Gill early doors, blazed a 17-ball 47 to offer brief resistance, but his dismissal brought the house down quickly and CSK were bundled out for a paltry 140. Overall, it was all or nothing for the men in yellow in the chase. It was an all-round bowling display from GT, with Siraj, Rabada and Rashid each picking up three wickets apiece. A performance that will give them plenty of motivation as they are now playoff bound.23:17 IST:
An underwhelming season - When Chennai Super Kings look back on this season, they will have little choice but to admit it has been a below-par campaign. They opened with three straight defeats and could never string together a consistent run of wins in the middle phase. A strong recovery of three back-to-back victories in the second half kept them in contention just outside the top four, but what followed was a disappointing three-match losing slide that ultimately ended their season. One has to feel for CSK given the injury toll they absorbed this season. They lost promising youngster Ayush Mhatre early on, with Khaleel Ahmed also ruled out along the way. But the real body-blow came when Jamie Overton was sidelined for the rest of the season at the precise moment CSK needed to push harder. Overton had been prolific with the ball and chipped in with handy cameos with the bat as well. A somewhat reshaped unit never quite clicked together, and Anshul Kamboj endured a torrid run with the ball in the final three games or so. It sums up their journey this season rather neatly.23:22 IST:
GT's premier pacer is next up - Kagiso Rabada mentions that their top three batted phenomenally by scoring a bulk of the runs and giving the bowlers enough runs to defend. On how he keeps delivering every time, he says it is simply about doing your best, no matter how you feel. He says you walk up to the game, stay unafraid to be competitive, and that is what he tries to do. On his new role alongside Siraj, he says he has bowled across all three phases of the game and keeps it simple, doing whatever the coach and team require of him and executing to the best of his ability. On the break before the playoffs, he keeps it light. Says they will have their feet up, hotel room, some series on the screen, and then hit the ground running.23:14 IST:
The captain of the Chennai Super Kings - Ruturaj Gaikwad reflects on the defeat. (On the chase and Gujarat’s dominance) He says CSK knew chasing 230 against an attack like Gujarat's was always going to be difficult, but the idea was to play positively and give themselves the best chance. He credits GT for outplaying them in all departments and admits they failed to execute properly in the Powerplay, allowing Gill and Sudharsan to take control. (On CSK’s season and injuries) He admits the season was challenging, especially after the early losses, but says the team found momentum once the right combinations clicked. Injuries to key all-rounders like Overton and Ghosh disrupted the balance again, forcing them to compromise either batting or bowling depth in the latter stages. (On positives and the young core) Despite missing out on the playoffs, he feels there were plenty of positives, highlighting six wins and several strong performances. He praises youngsters like Karthik Sharma, Urvil Patel and Dewald Brevis, saying the experience gained this season will help them grow going forward. (On MS Dhoni’s future) He says there is no clarity yet on Dhoni’s future, but admits CSK massively missed his presence, especially in pressure situations. He adds that the franchise will hope to come back stronger next season.23:08 IST:
GT crush CSK at home - As clinical as it can get for the Gujarat Titans. They were relentless with the bat, did get spanked for a few with the ball, which happens in such games, and were spotless in the field. A complete team performance that takes them to 18 points, and makes their case for a top-two finish a whole lot stronger. As for the Chennai Super Kings, they are now officially knocked out of IPL 2026. They have now failed to make it to the playoffs for the third consecutive year since their last title win in 2023. GT totally outplayed them in every department tonight.23:00 IST:
13.4: Kagiso Rabada to Spencer Johnson, OUT! CAUGHT BEHIND! Done and Dusted as GUJARAT TITANS WIN BY 89 RUNS. An excellent review and Kagiso Rabada wraps things up here. Good-length delivery, on middle and leg, takes off sharply and angles away. Spencer Johnson backs away and has a tentative poke, but the ball zips past the outside edge into the gloves of Jos Buttler. Rabada appeals for a caught behind but does not get much support from the keeper. However, Gill trusts his bowler and takes the review. UltraEdge shows a big spike when the ball is next to the bat, and that brings a damning end to CSK's season.22:58 IST:
Spencer Johnson is the last man in for CSK.22:58 IST:
13.3: Kagiso Rabada to Noor Ahmad, OUT! CAUGHT AND BOWLED! And the procession continues for the men in yellow. GT are just one step away from a massive victory. On a back of a length, at 141 kph, angling into the body. Noor looks to tuck it leg side but the ball gets big on him, hits the splice of the bat and balloons back towards the bowler. Rabada takes a simple return catch. CSK are 140/9.22:57 IST:

12.4: Rashid Khan to Dewald Brevis, OUT! CAUGHT! Rashid has his third wicket. Clever bowling from the crafty Afghan leggie. He dishes it outside off, and offers some flight on a shorter length. Dewald Brevis flashes hard at it, looking to smash it over mid off, but gets it sliced in the air off the outer half of the bat. Jason Holder at cover, settles under it and takes a dolly. Brevis departs and the Super Kings are 138/8, needing 92 runs.22:53 IST:

Urvil stays rooted and looks to swipe across the line. Swings hard and gets a top edge. The ball balloons high into the night sky behind square on the leg side. Prasidh Krishna at deep backward square gets underneath it and takes a superb catch under by planting his left knee into the ground to balance himself up. Chennai Super Kings are in deep trouble now with 3 down on just 29. They need 201 more from 104 balls.21:57 IST:

And it is actually Washington Sundar from point who is very convinced. But not such confidence from Buttler or the bowler either. However, Gill takes the review eventually. UltraEdge shows that flat line. Urvil stays.21:58 IST:

... THE RUN CHASE ...21:39 IST:
CSK left searching for answers - Not much went right for CSK with the ball as they struggled to create pressure or force mistakes early on. They did manage to find Gill's edge once, but with no appeal from the fielders, the chance went begging. Gurjapneet Singh was the pick of the bowlers with a tidy spell, while Mukesh Choudhary and Anshul Kamboj chipped in with a wicket each. Noor Ahmad, however, had an off day and CSK looked out of sorts for most of the innings. They now face a massive task in the chase if they are to keep their slim playoff hopes alive. Join us in a bit for the second essay.21:36 IST:
A quick chat with Sai Sudharsan - He dons the Orange Cap after his fabulous knock of 84. On his knock tonight, Sai Sudharsan says the way Shubman Gill played was outstanding and feels that had he been at his best early on, they could have scored 10 to 15 more runs. He admits he was not firing on all cylinders early in his innings. On their approach at the top of the order, he says they do not look at individual scores and play accordingly. He reiterates that he was not firing but points out that they were running at 10 runs per over at the end of the Powerplay. He explains that they play as a partnership, and that is what allows them to take the right chances and play freely. On scoring five consecutive fifty-plus scores in the IPL, he says it feels really awesome to be in that company. But he is quick to redirect, saying the priority right now is winning the game. He signs off with gratitude, saying he is thankful to God for the opportunity.21:38 IST:
Gujarat batters run riot - Gujarat Titans got off to a flying start with their classy opening pair taking complete control early on. They cashed in on every loose delivery and kept the runs flowing freely. Shubman Gill raced away to a blistering fifty off just 23 balls, with the opening stand worth 125 runs. Sai Sudharsan carried on the charge alongside Buttler and played a brilliant knock of 84 from 53 deliveries before falling. Buttler then took over in the closing stages, finishing unbeaten with a fiery 57 off just 27 balls.21:37 IST:

Strategic Break! The Gujarat Titans openers are flying once again, with Shubman Gill notching up a sublime fifty while Sai Sudharsan is playing second fiddle so far. They have built the platform for a massive total on the board and things are looking threatening for the visitors. Chennai Super Kings haven't troubled the batters at all, but they will hope that they can pull things back in the middle overs and get rid of the GT top three quickly to put pressure on the middle order, which have not made much impact this season. Who's up from the CSK camp? It is the Assistant Bowling Coach, Sridharan Sriram. He says that both Noor Ahmad and Akeal Hosein have been great. Adds that they are great students of the game, and it has been a pleasure to work with them. Mentions that he's got this relationship from last year, Noor was there and Akeal was in MLC, so they already had a rapport and it wasn't like they had to build the relationship from scratch but it has been nice to build on that. Sriram reckons that both spinners complement each other well. Akeal can be used in the Powerplay, which gives freedom to use Noor in a more attacking way through the middle overs. Shares that Prashant Veer is a very clever bowler, he is not the stylish orthodox left-arm spinner but more like Krunal Pandya. He watches the batter till late and can adjust his speed and variations accordingly. Says that Gaikwad has been looking to bowl him more, but the opportunity has not presented itself but hopes to see him bowl in the future.19:16 IST:
Let's now hear from Jos Buttler - On being asked about how would he grade his season so far with the bat, Jos Buttler admits that it has been much better than the T20 World Cup. Says that he has found the form, but also admits that he could have converted some of the starts into big scores, but feels that he is hitting the ball really well now. When asked how the IPL helped him rediscover form after the World Cup, he says it helps massively. He points to the quality of facilities and the wealth of resources available, and calls it a great tournament to be part of. On what did GT take away from their last game against KKR, Buttler admits they were disappointed with the result. He singles out their fielding lapses and says their execution with the ball was also a bit off. He adds that it is a massive game for both teams and says it is all about coming out and starting fresh from scratch. On countering fatigue at this late stage of the tournament, Buttler says the squad has worked really hard so far and stresses the importance of staying mentally fit. He describes it as a very exciting phase of the tournament, one that demands an extra bit of energy as well.19:11 IST:

The captain of Gujarat Titans - Shubman Gill says that he would have bowled first as well but doesn't mind batting first as there hasn't been much dew. They need to play good cricket over the 40 overs. Adds that he doesn't like to go by stats but teams batting first have won more matches here. Gill mentions that they have to keep the intensity high. They dropped a few catches in the last game, so they need to improve on fielding. Says that their bowling has been right up there and batting has been good too. Suggests that just because they have a 'Q' next to their name, it doesn't mean the job is done. He hopes that all three departments come good and they have three more good games. Informs that Prasidh Krishna comes back in the team in place of Sai Kishore.19:10 IST:
The skipper of Chennai Super Kings - Ruturaj Gaikwad says that there is a bit of pace and bounce on the surface, and they want to exploit the conditions with the ball first up. On the changes, Gaikwad informs that Akeal Hosein misses out, and Gurjapneet Singh comes in for him. Also adds that Matthew Short is in for Prashant Veer. On what the talks have been coming into this game, Ruturaj mentions that it is about keeping simple and trusting the process. Shares that even in the last game, they gave a good fight, but couldn't get the desired result. Says that a lot of things unfold during the game, but stresses that it is all about turning up and getting that win.
