The Indian Cricket Board has named a full-strength squad for Asian Games 2026 set to be held at Aichi–Nagoya in Japan. Shreyas Iyer is leading the Indian team which has Jasprit Bumrah and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi among others.
Big decisions were taken in the selection meeting held in Mumbai where the BCCI dropped T20 World Cup-winning captain Suryakumar Yadav from the Indian team. Shreyas was elevated to the position of the T20I captain after three strong seasons in the Indian Premier League. Iyer, who reached back to back IPL finals in 2024 and 2025 was rewarded with the leadership of the Indian team. Meanwhile, Tilak Varma was also elevated to the position of vice-captain.

FULL STRENGTH SQUAD FOR ASIAN GAMES
The Indian squad announced for Asian Games 2026 is starkly different from the one that was announced for the 2022 Games in Hangzhou. 3 years back (the Games were deferred to 2023), a Ruturaj Gaikwad-led team arrived at the Games which had multiple youngsters in them.

India, who were the top seeds in the tournament, reached the final of the event without any hiccups. The gold medal match against Afghanistan had to be abandoned due to rain, and India were announced winners by the virtue of being a higher seeded team.
WHO ARE NEW IN ASIAN GAMES SQUAD?
This year, the contrast to the squad is visible as India have opted for 10 members of the T20 World Cup-winning squad.
Shreyas Iyer, Nitish Reddy, Ravi Bishnoi, Harshit Rana, and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi are the only players who were not part of India's T20 World Cup team.
Out of these five, Harshit Rana was originally set to play in the World Cup, but was injured just before the tournament. Shreyas Iyer and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi have broken the selection doors to enter the Indian team, while Nitish Reddy and Ravi Bishnoi have been named for their huge potential.
The Asian Games will be played between September 23 and October 8 later this year.
