A man shared how what seemed like a promising job opportunity turned into a disturbing scam, after he showed up for an in-person interview only to discover that the company didn’t exist.

The post, shared on Reddit’s r/recruitinghell, detailed how he had been job hunting for months when he was contacted by a recruiter for what appeared to be a “high priority Operations Manager role” at a reputed business address.

He explained that everything initially seemed legitimate, adding that “everything seemed professional over email,” with a formal calendar invite, a suite number, and even a security clearance form. However, things took a strange turn when he arrived at the location.

According to him, when he informed security about his scheduled interview, he was told that “the entire 14th floor has been vacant and under construction for nearly six months” and that no such company existed in the building.

The situation quickly escalated into concern when he tried to reach the recruiter and access the company’s website. “I tried to call the recruiter number but it was disconnected... it was like the entire company vanished into thin air the moment I stepped into the lobby,” he wrote.

It was then that the realisation set in. “They didn’t want to hire me. They wanted my data,” he said, adding that he had already shared sensitive information, including his social security number, ID scan, and personal details as part of the so-called security process.

Describing the experience as deeply unsettling, he admitted that he felt “incredibly stupid and violated,” while warning others about increasingly sophisticated scams that exploit jobseekers. He also revealed that he had since taken steps such as freezing his credit cards and filing a police report.

The post left the internet stunned, with several users sharing that similar incidents had happened more often than people realise. Some shared cases where buildings had to put up notices clarifying that certain companies did not exist, after multiple victims kept showing up for fake interviews.

Others pointed out how convincing such scams could be, observing that even cautious individuals could fall for them given the level of detail and professionalism involved. Several users admitted that the story heightened their own fears about job hunting and online interactions.

There were also discussions about data security, with some emphasising how vulnerable personal information could be once shared, and how incidents like these underscored the need for greater awareness and caution when dealing with unsolicited job offers.
