Industrialist Anand Mahindra has congratulated IAS officer Ashwini Bhide following her historic appointment as the first woman Municipal Commissioner of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in over 160 years.

In an X post, Mahindra lauded Bhide’s reputation for delivering results in some of Mumbai’s most complex and high-pressure infrastructure environments. Highlighting her work on the city’s metro projects, he wrote, “Whether it is navigating the complexity of the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation or delivering against impossible timelines in one of the world’s most demanding urban environments, Ashwini Bhide is accustomed to being a game-changer.”

However, Mahindra’s message goes beyond the symbolism of the achievement. Emphasising that her past work speaks louder than the milestone itself, he noted, “Which is why making history as Mumbai’s first woman BMC Commissioner is just another milestone for her.”

He further added a note of anticipation for what lies ahead: “And if her past is any indication, this milestone won’t define her. What she builds next will.”

A 1995-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer, Bhide has now taken charge of one of India’s most powerful civic bodies, succeeding Bhushan Gagrani. Her appointment is being widely recognised as a watershed moment, not just for the BMC but for women in public leadership.

Bhide’s administrative journey has consistently been marked by her ability to execute large-scale projects under tight deadlines, often in the face of logistical and urban challenges unique to a city like Mumbai.

Her leadership at the BMC comes at a crucial juncture, with the city grappling with rapid urbanisation, infrastructure expansion, and civic demands.

Internet users congratulated Bhide as well and applauded her appointment. “Ashwini Bhide is a true trailblazer. Her leadership is inspiring, especially in such a challenging environment. Major congratulations on this historic achievement!” said one X user.

Historic, indeed!
