Honda has offered fresh insight into its upcoming sub-4 metre SUV, with the company claiming the new model is being developed to set benchmarks in quality and efficiency within its segment. The compact SUV, confirmed for launch by 2028, will mark Honda’s return to one of India’s most competitive segments after the discontinuation of the WR-V.

Speaking to Auto Today, Kunal Behl, Vice President, Marketing and Sales at Honda Cars India, mentioned that the brand is aiming for a class-leading package tailored specifically for Indian buyers.

"Within the space of less than 4 metres, we are trying to develop a product which will be the best in terms of quality parameters, in terms of efficiency," he said during the interaction.

Honda recently confirmed plans to introduce six new products in India as part of its broader expansion strategy. Among these, Behl confirmed the arrival of the EV prototype called “0 Alpha”, which is expected to debut in the second half of the current financial year. Details regarding the remaining products are still under wraps.

The new sub-4 metre SUV forms a key part of Honda’s India-focused revival strategy. During its latest global financial results briefing, the Japanese automaker acknowledged that its earlier global product-led approach may not have fully aligned with Indian market requirements. Going forward, Honda says future models will be developed with stronger localisation and customer-centric priorities tailored to Indian usage patterns and preferences.

Honda President and Representative Executive Officer Toshihiro Mibe recently stated that the company aims to improve its competitiveness in India by creating products that better match the needs of local customers.

Once launched, the upcoming compact SUV is expected to rival established players including the Tata Nexon, Mahindra XUV 3XO, Hyundai Venue and Kia Sonet.

Apart from new products, Honda is also strengthening its ecosystem in India. The company has established Honda Digital Innovation India to support future mobility and customer engagement initiatives. Additionally, Honda is preparing to launch a captive finance business in the country before the end of FY2027 to support vehicle financing and retail expansion.

Although technical specifications, platform details and powertrain options for the upcoming SUV remain undisclosed, Honda’s latest comments suggest the automaker is prioritising refinement, fuel efficiency and perceived quality as core differentiators for its upcoming compact SUV strategy in India.
