As Manipur heads into the General Election Lok Sabha, it poses a challenging period for both the state and the ruling party, BJP. The state's geographical split - into Inner and Outer Parliamentary constituencies - consists of only two seats. The Inner Manipur constituency is currently represented by BJP leader and Union minister RK Ranjan and the Outer Manipur constituency by Naga People's Front member Lorho S Foze. Population demographics play a crucial role in the Inner Parliamentary election particularly as the Meitei community, Hindus and Muslims combined, make up the largest ethnic group with considerable influence on the people's mandate. With Manipur's population standing at approximately 36.49 lakh, and around 9 lakh being eligible Inner Manipur voters, the upcoming Lok Sabha elections pose a significant challenge for the BJP.
