As a team of Odisha Fire Services left for Meghalaya to assist the rescue operations of the 15 miners trapped in a rat-hole coalmine for the past two weeks, India Today explains why the illegal mining is rampant in Meghalaya despite a ban in 2014.
The miners have been trapped inside the 370-foot coalmine since December 13 in the Ksan area of Lumthari village of Meghalaya.
Two days ago, divers working at the rescue site reported a foul smell emanating from the mine, triggering concerns that the miners may have died inside the rat-hole cave and their bodies decomposed.
