Five things that actually happen on a nude cruise

Wait. Don't let your mind wander just yet. It's less wild than you think, and somehow more liberating.

A nude cruise is almost what it sounds like, but there’s no explicit dirty business going on out in the open. Let’s just say it’s a quirky way to explore yourself and the wanderlust that gets you going.

Essentially, these are voyages where clothing is optional, the ocean breeze goes everywhere, and nobody judges you for it. A leading operator that organises such odysseys is an American tours and travel company, Bare Necessities (yes, that’s the name), which charters full-ship nude cruises. It is affiliated with the American Association of Nude Recreation (AANR), which claims to be the largest nudist organisation in North America.

Yes, nudism or naturism, as it's called, is a thing. It's not as wild but more like a lifestyle practice. Will circle back to it in a bit.

While the company has different cruises planned throughout the year, their flagship event is the ‘Big Nude Boat’. It is an 11-day adventure on the Norwegian Cruise Line ship with over 2,000 passengers across the Eastern Caribbean islands of Puerto Rico, the British Virgin Islands, St. Kitts, Antigua, the Dominican Republic, and more.

When you are aboard, passengers are spoilt for choices. They can enjoy multiple dining venues ranging from fine dining to casual cafs, chic bars and lounges for sunset cocktails. One can enjoy a bit of clubbing and maybe some theatre too.

There’s also a full-service spa with thermal suites, a pool deck made for lazy afternoons, a fitness centre, casino, library corners, and plenty of plush corners to unwind. That's not it. There are also private island stops, beach days, and curated entertainment, and it’s essentially a luxe Caribbean holiday, just with a more liberated dress code.

Speaking with Business Insider, Kate Whitmore, VP at Bare Necessities, said, “These cruises are great for the nudism-curious. It’s not for everyone—and that’s okay—but if you’re intrigued, it might be your kind of holiday.” She adds that nearly 70 per cent are repeat guests, the tickets even sell out fast.

Their website has a detailed structure of the pricing, and you can choose which cabin, on which deck you wish. Bookinds are open for there February 2027 cruise already.

Naked truth behind a nude cruise

It’s fun and liberating, in a sense.

Now, coming back to the idea of naturism. The voyagers are primarily those who consider themselves naturists and believe in naturism. It is a lifestyle rooted in the idea of non-sexual, voluntary nudity, encouraging people to feel at ease in their own skin while reconnecting with nature. It is here where conversations around body positivity and body image take on the spotlight.

Whether it’s unwinding at home or visiting designated beaches and resorts, the idea is simple: comfort, confidence, and a sense of freedom. And such social nudity also, in a way, works as a great equaliser – no designer labels, no status signals, just people, unfiltered.

Are people nude all the time?

Nope.

The official website emphasises that it is not a swinger lifestyle but just a cruise where people embrace nudism in a non-sexual manner. Therefore, there are rules.

There is a place and time to be able to walk bare and garment-free.

When the ship is out at sea or anchored, you’re free to go au naturel unless told otherwise. But the moment you’re docked, it’s back to being fully dressed—yes, even on your balcony—until the ship sails off again and the all-clear is announced.

The towel rule is gospel. If you are to sit bare-bottomed anywhere, you’d better have one beneath you. Hygiene matters. But when it is about food, formal dining rooms do require clothes.

Buffets are relaxed and clothing-optional, but if you’re heading to the dining room, outfits are a must (and no, bathrobes don’t count as dinner wear). Keep it casual, just make sure all the essentials, if you know what we mean, are covered.

As a rule of thumb, lingerie, fetish-wear, excessive genital jewellery, are strictly considered inappropriate at all times.

Also, no photograph of passengers can be taken without prior consent.

To be on a nude cruise, there’s a decorum to be followed, and violation of it may lead to dismissal at the next port without any refund.

Bon voyage

So, when it comes to the travel prep, travellers don’t really have to stress about “what to pack.” Keep it light, obviously. Just go through all the terms and conditions and the full package price on the official website before booking.

Cruising your way through wanderlust is now a growing travel trend for sure. But would you ever go on a nude cruise?
