The Uttar Pradesh government has granted tax-free status to Krishnavataram Part 1. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced the decision on Sunday after a special screening of the film.
The recently-released film Krishnavataram Part 1 has been made tax-free in Uttar Pradesh. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced the decision on Sunday after attending a special screening of the film at Lok Bhavan.
The state government has directed that special screenings be organised across districts so that children and young people can connect with Indian culture and heritage.
Directed by Hardik Gajjar, the film was released on May 7 in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu languages. It stars Siddharth Gupta, Sanskruti, Sushmitha Bhatt and Nivaashiyni Krishnan in the lead roles, while Jackie Shroff and Ashutosh Rana also play key parts.
At the special screening
Along with Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Sunday's special screening was also attended by Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel, Deputy Chief Ministers Keshav Prasad Maurya and Brajesh Pathak, other cabinet ministers, BJP state president Pankaj Chaudhary and several public representatives.
The official statement said the auditorium reverberated with chants of “Krishna-Krishna” and “Radhe-Radhe” during the screening. Adityanath also congratulated the artistes associated with the film on stage.
According to PTI, the Chief Minister said the film presents the life of Lord Krishna from a human perspective and depicts the Dwapar era, Sanatan culture and Indian traditions on a grand scale. He said the stories of Radha, Rukmini and Satyabhama have also been portrayed in the film.
He described the occasion as a matter of pride for Governor Anandiben Patel, whose granddaughter, Sanskruti, plays Satyabhama in the film. Patel said more films based on Indian culture and traditions should be made.
Makers react
Responding to the announcement, the makers wrote on X, “With immense gratitude, we are honoured to share that Krishnavataram has been declared tax-free in Uttar Pradesh by Hon’ble Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath ji. Thank you for supporting a film that brings alive our heritage, our culture and the story of Shri Krishna for audiences across generations (sic).”
What the film shows
Krishnavataram Part 1: The Heart (Hridayam) is the first film in a three-part series that explores different aspects of Lord Krishna, including his life as a devoted lover, faithful husband, righteous king, valiant warrior and wise strategist.
The first instalment focuses on the challenges in Krishna’s path as he carries out his duties.
India Today gave the film 4 stars. A part of the review read, "Despite its flaws, Krishnavataram does remain engaging through most of its 2-hour-25-minute runtime. The current mood of the country definitely gives religious films an edge, but this one also earns attention through visual ambition and the decision to spotlight Bhama’s story – something mainstream adaptations have rarely explored this lavishly."
As part of the film’s promotions, its trailer was unveiled at Krishna Janmabhoomi in Mathura. The launch also extended to Raman Reti Temple, Radha Rani Temple, Prem Mandir and ISKCON Vrindavan.
