Filming for the biopic on former India captain Sourav Ganguly has begun in Kolkata after the production completed its Mumbai leg. The film has moved to the city for a 15-day schedule, with shoots taking place at several locations linked to Ganguly's life and cricketing journey.

Rajkummar Rao, who plays Ganguly in the film titled Dada: The Sourav Ganguly Story, arrived in Kolkata earlier this week and was seen at the Kolkata Maidan on Wednesday. After completing a morning workout session, the actor spent the day filming scenes for the biopic. Excitement among fans over the film based on Bengal’s beloved ‘Dada’ continues to run high.

The first phase of the Kolkata schedule is centred on Ganguly's childhood and upbringing, following his journey from the lanes of Behala to becoming a cricketer.

The shoot began early Tuesday morning at Sourav Ganguly’s residence in Behala. On Wednesday, Kolkata’s historic East Bengal Club grounds were abuzz with activity as the production recreated the phase when Sourav played cricket for Aryan Club. Amid tight security, elaborate sets were erected on the premises, where Rajkummar Rao was seen filming in a red tracksuit as ‘Dada’.

The city is now witnessing the recreation of the first chapter of Sourav’s remarkable journey — from his early struggles in Kolkata to the iconic shirt-waving moment at Lord’s that cemented his legacy as the ‘God of the Off-side’. Shooting has also taken place at Eden Gardens.

With the IPL season at Eden Gardens concluding on Sunday, the makers were finally able to begin filming at the iconic stadium. Scenes are also being shot at the Dukhiram Cricket Coaching Centre located beneath the Aryan Club. Sourav’s residence in Behala remains an important part of the filming schedule. The former cricketer himself was present during portions of the shoot at both his home and Eden Gardens..

The film is directed by Vikramaditya Motwane, while music director Pritam has been roped in for the project. Motwane reportedly plans to infuse the film with a strong Bengali essence through the music and overall treatment.

Tanya Maniktala has been cast as Sourav’s wife, Dona Ganguly. The film is expected to explore the romantic phase of Sourav and Dona’s relationship in detail, with sources suggesting that parts of their journey will be depicted through a musical sequence.

To retain an authentic Bengali flavour, several actors from Bengal have been cast in key roles. Aparajita Adhya plays Sourav’s mother, Nirupa Ganguly, while Saswata Chatterjee essays the role of his father, Chandi Ganguly. Several supporting characters are also being portrayed by Bengali actors.

Srija Bhattacharya will play young Dona in the film. A Class 7 student from Sonarpur, Srija has reportedly been acting since childhood.

For years, speculation surrounded who would portray the ‘Maharaj’ on screen. Names of several Bollywood stars, including Ranbir Kapoor, had surfaced over time. However, the role eventually went to Rajkummar Rao, widely regarded as one of Bollywood’s most versatile actors.

The biopic is filming across locations such as Behala, the Maidan, East Bengal Club, Aryan Club, the Dukhiram Cricket Coaching Centre and Eden Gardens. As the Kolkata schedule continues, the film is capturing different stages of Ganguly's life, from his early years in the city to the larger journey that made him one of Indian cricket's most recognisable figures.
