Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay on May 25 issued an order allowing theatres across the state to screen five shows daily for seven days from the release date of new Tamil films. The move is expected to provide a major boost to the theatrical business, especially for big-ticket releases that witness massive opening-week demand.

Currently, theatres in Tamil Nadu are permitted to screen only four regular shows a day. A fifth "special show" is allowed only during local festivals or public holidays, subject to approval from district collectors or, in Chennai, the city police commissioner. The government also needs to issue a separate order to approve the additional show.

The decision has already sparked excitement among theatre owners, distributors and fans, with many calling it a significant push for Tamil cinema’s theatrical culture. Extended show permissions have often been associated with festive releases and superstar-led films, and the latest order is likely to benefit upcoming major Tamil releases at the box office.
