Vignesh Shivan breaks silence on 'normal people' viral video controversy
Director Vignesh Shivan addressed the backlash over 'normal people' comment made by an organiser during an event. He explained the video was edited to misrepresent his words.

Vignesh Shivan, in a recent interview, addressed the controversy surrounding the 'normal people' comments that attracted criticism towards him and his wife, Nayanthara, a few months ago. The director is currently promoting his latest directorial venture, Love Insurance Kompany (LIK), featuring Pradeep Ranganathan and Krithi Shetty in lead roles.
The controversy arose when the couple organised an event for their sanitary napkin brand, Femi9, inviting influencers to promote the brand. A video of their manager attempting to manage the crowd by saying, 'Please cooperate; they're not normal people,' went viral.
This led to backlash from influencers who attended the event and criticised the notion of giving the couple a superiority status.
Clarifying the situation, Vignesh Shivan told Behindwoods, "He [the organiser] actually said, "We're not normal people; we are influencers." It was his way of telling them to behave appropriately, as those who had come there were not mere common men but influencers. Those who published the video online changed "we are" to "they are" and twisted the tale for the sake of likes and views. We then reached out to the one who posted the video, and he requested us to let the video be because it was garnering a lot of views."
Meanwhile, LIK continues to perform at the box office, having earned nearly Rs 32 crore in India in six days, although the film has received mixed reviews. The movie also stars SJ Suryah, Gouri Kishan, Yogi Babu, Seeman, among others, and revolves around a man's search for love in a world where relationships are increasingly techno-centric and transactional.
The film's crew includes music composer Anirudh, who has reunited with Vignesh Shivan, Ravi Varman as the director of photography, and Pradeep E Ragav as the editor.
