YSRTP leader YS Sharmila towed away in car; unprecedented civilian protests in China; more

High political drama erupted on Tuesday in Hyderabad's Somajiguda area after police dragged away the car of YSRTP founder and chief YS Sharmila Reddy with the help of a crane, even as she sat inside it in protest against Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao.

Sharmila, who is the sister of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, was later arrested by the Hyderabad Police as she proceeded to gherao Pragathi Bhavan, the office of CM.

University students have been sent home and security forces have been deployed in large numbers on the streets of capital Beijing and Shanghai to quash dissent after days of protests against the government's stringent Covid control measures. The protests slowly spread to over a dozen cities and China resorted to detention, surveillance and censorship to quell further dissent amid a record spike in Covid cases in the country.
