Mark Zuckerberg got tired of being driven around, so he learned to fly helicopters for freedom

Mark Zuckerberg says he grew tired of being driven around by his security team and decided to take matters into his own hands, quite literally. The Meta boss revealed that he learnt to fly helicopters because he wanted greater freedom and independence in his daily life.

What do you do when you're tired of being driven around everywhere? If you're Mark Zuckerberg, you learn to fly a helicopter. A video of the Meta chief executive is currently going viral on X, in which the billionaire reveals that he grew tired of relying on his security team for transport. Wanting more freedom and independence in his daily life and commute, Zuckerberg decided to swap the back seat for the cockpit.

Zuckerberg's revelation on why he learned to fly helicopters came during an appearance on comedian Theo Von's podcast This Past Weekend, where he opened up about everything from his daily routine and family life to cars, flying and technology. During the conversation, he explained that for nearly a decade his security team persuaded him to let them drive him everywhere. While he understood the reasons behind it, he eventually grew frustrated with the arrangement and wanted more freedom in how he travelled.

"For a while, my security team kind of convinced me for like 10 years that I should just let them drive me places," he said. But after years of relying on chauffeurs, he decided he wanted to regain some independence.

That decision eventually led him to aviation. Zuckerberg told Von that he began learning how to fly helicopters, only to realise the situation had become somewhat absurd. "We have the security team driving me to my helicopter that I then go fly away," he joked. "It's like that makes no sense." The Meta chief said the experience pushed him to start driving himself again and buy a car he genuinely enjoyed using.

Despite learning to fly, Zuckerberg clarified that he does not fly alone. He said a professional pilot always accompanies him during helicopter trips. The aircraft, however, gives him a level of flexibility and personal control that he felt was missing when he relied entirely on security-driven transport.

Zuckerberg also insists that learning to fly was not about showing off an expensive hobby. Instead, he described it as a practical response to feeling constrained by years of security protocols. As he told Von, he simply wanted the freedom to decide for himself how he got from one place to another.

Meanwhile, this is not the first time Zuckerberg has offered a glimpse into his ultra-wealthy lifestyle. The man behind Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp has often talked about topics far beyond Meta's business. He has often discussed personal interests such as mixed martial arts, jiu-jitsu, cars, family life and even shared glimpse into his much talked about Hawaii estate.
