Reports suggest that Maruti Suzuki may be quietly pulling the plug on the Maruti Suzuki Ignis after nearly nine years on sale in India, following a prolonged decline in demand.

According to dealer-level inputs cited by Cartoq, production of the Ignis has reportedly been halted for over a month, and several dealerships have stopped accepting fresh bookings. However, the model continues to remain listed on the company’s official website, and an official confirmation from the carmaker is still awaited.

Launched in 2017 through the brand’s Nexa retail network, the Ignis carved a niche for itself with its unconventional, crossover-inspired design and urban-focused positioning. Initially offered with both petrol and diesel engine options, the hatchback eventually transitioned to a petrol-only lineup after the diesel variant was discontinued in 2018. It also featured an AMT option aimed at enhancing city drivability.

Despite its distinct styling and relatively accessible pricing, the Ignis struggled to match the popularity of more mainstream offerings such as the Maruti Suzuki Swift. While it saw its best performance in 2022, sales volumes remained modest in comparison and have steadily tapered off since. In recent months, monthly dispatches reportedly dropped below the 2,000-unit mark. In March 2026, Maruti sold 1,250 units of the hatchback.

One of the key factors behind its underwhelming performance appears to be its polarising rear design, which failed to resonate with a broad audience. Additionally, the model saw limited lifecycle updates, receiving just a single major facelift in 2020, further impacting its competitiveness in an increasingly feature-rich segment.

At present, only limited inventory is said to be available across select dealerships, indicating that the model may soon be phased out entirely. Its trajectory mirrors that of the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz, which also saw a gradual exit after minimal product intervention over the years.

While a direct replacement for the Ignis is unlikely, industry chatter suggests that Maruti Suzuki could reposition itself in the entry-level crossover space with a new sub-compact SUV, expected to rival models like the Hyundai Exter and Tata Punch.

Even as the Ignis nears the end of its lifecycle, Maruti Suzuki continues to post strong overall performance. The company closed FY2025–26 with its highest-ever annual sales, recording a total of 24,22,713 units across domestic and export markets.

Domestic sales stood at 18,61,704 units, while exports reached a record 4,47,774 units, highlighting sustained demand across key markets. The automaker also extended its streak of surpassing the 2 million annual sales milestone for the third consecutive year.

In March 2026, Maruti Suzuki reported total sales of 2,25,251 units, up from 1,92,984 units in the same month last year. Domestic volumes contributed 1,69,428 units, while exports accounted for 47,040 units, reflecting strong year-on-year growth.

As the company sharpens its focus on high-volume and emerging segments, the exit of slower-moving models like the Ignis signals a broader strategy shift toward more competitive and in-demand offerings.
