A 72-year-old chartered accountant from Delhi was allegedly abducted, assaulted and robbed in a honey-trap conspiracy after a woman known to him visited his residence with accomplices, police said. Four accused, including a serving Army personnel, have been arrested in connection with the case.
According to police, the incident took place on May 2 at the victim’s residence in Sainik Farms in South Delhi. The victim, identified as Man Mohan Gupta, was alone at home when a woman named Kalpana, with whom he was allegedly acquainted, had come to meet him as planned.
However, soon after she entered the house, her associates allegedly barged in, overpowered the elderly man and robbed him of cash, jewellery, documents and other valuables. Police said the accused stole around Rs 5 lakh from an almirah, additional cash kept in drawers and a purse, along with gold rings, Aadhaar card, driving licence and bank cards.
The accused then allegedly forced Gupta into his own Toyota Camry and drove towards Meerut, during which they demanded a ransom of Rs 50 lakh. Police said the victim was pressured to contact acquaintances and arrange Rs 15 lakh on the pretext of an accident. When their attempts failed, the accused abandoned him near the Delhi-Mumbai Highway in Haryana’s Firozpur Jhirka area before fleeing. Gupta later managed to reach a nearby dhaba and informed police.
Following a PCR call on May 3, South Delhi Police launched an investigation and formed two dedicated teams. Through CCTV analysis, technical surveillance and local enquiries, police identified the suspects and arrested two accused, Kalpana and Surender, from Mathura within 36 hours. Police recovered Rs 4 lakh in cash and the victim’s purse from them.
Investigators later found that Kalpana and Surender, both divorcees, had met through Instagram and married at an Arya Samaj temple in November 2025. Surender is a serving Army personnel posted in Mathura, though police said he had not reported there recently.
Subsequent raids in Haryana’s Fatehabad district led to the arrest of two more accused. Police said additional stolen cash, gold jewellery, an air gun and the vehicle used in the crime were also recovered. Further investigation is underway.
