Lucknow Police on Wednesday arrested a Bangladeshi national who had been living in India illegally for the last 14 years using fraudulently obtained documents. Police revealed he had also purchased land in a village near Lucknow, raising suspicion of a larger network at play.

Foreign nationals are not allowed to buy land or property in India, as per Indian law.

According to police officials, Arup Bakshi is originally from Narail district in Bangladesh. He illegally entered India in 2012 and lived with a doctor in Sitapur until 2014. During this period, he managed to obtain an Aadhaar card, voter ID, driving licence, and even an Indian passport. He also opened a bank account using these Indian documents, police said.

In 2014, he began living a normal life in the Bakshi Ka Talab area of Lucknow while keeping his Bangladeshi identity hidden from local residents.

Investigation revealed that the accused purchased about 800 square feet of land in Mampar Bana village of Lucknow district using these documents. Police are now preparing a list of his contacts in Sitapur and Lucknow in an effort to unravel the network that helped him forge documents and illegally acquire property.

What shocked investigators the most was that Bakshi was running a clinic without any medical degree.

Police have recovered Aadhaar cards, mobile phones, and several other suspicious documents from him. A case has been registered under multiple sections, including the Foreigners Act.
