The father-in-law of Trinamool Congress MP and former India cricketer Yusuf Pathan was arrested along with two relatives after a road altercation in Mumbai’s Byculla area escalated into an alleged assault that left two people injured, police said Tuesday.

The accused -- identified as Khalid Khan, his son Umarshad Khan, and Shoaib Khan -- were arrested Monday. Another accused, Shahbaz Pathan, is absconding, officials said.

According to Byculla police, the incident began Saturday night when Yusuf Khan, 30, was driving home around 9 pm when his car passed through a pothole, splashing water onto Shoaib Khan, 35. Yusuf Khan told police he stopped and apologised, but Shoaib allegedly began abusing him and smashed the car’s windshield with a bamboo stick before assaulting him.

After returning home, Yusuf Khan set out with family members to file a complaint, police said. On the way, they encountered Khalid Khan and the others, leading to another confrontation. The entire incident was caught on CCTV cameras.

Police allege that Khalid, Umarshad, Shoaib and Shahbaz attacked Yusuf Khan and his relatives with bamboo sticks and a baseball bat. Yusuf Khan’s brother-in-law, Salman, suffered a fractured arm, while his uncle, Zaki Ahmed, sustained serious injuries.

A case has been registered for assault and causing grievous bodily harm. Police said the arrests were based on CCTV footage, witness statements and recovered weapons.

The three accused were produced before a court and remanded to judicial custody until May 2.

The defense lawyer disputed the police version, saying the incident was a minor altercation involving both sides.

“Both the complainant and my client attacked each other, but the police took their side and presented the case as if only my client was guilty,” the lawyer said.
