A 24-year-old married woman named Deepika Nagar allegedly died by suicide after jumping from the roof of her home in Greater Noida after being pressurised and assaulted over dowry demands.

According to the victim's family, Deepika was married to Hrithik, a resident of Jalpura. The marriage took place one-and-a-half months ago, and they spent a lump sum amount of Rs 1 crore. However, they alleged that the woman was continuously subjected to physical assault and mental harassment by her husband and in-laws, who were demanding additional dowry.

Speaking to India Today, Deepika's father, Sanjay Nagar, said, "The problems started occurring three/four months after the marriage. Hrithik and his family members wanted a Fortuner car and Rs 51 lakhs as part of the additional dowry. Torture allegedly increased after the family failed to meet these demands initially."

Nagar further added that he, along with his family members, gave everything that they could afford. However, that failed to satisfy the in-laws.

"At the time of marriage, we presented them with a Scorpio N model car and more than 10 lakh rupees. In addition, we also gifted them several gold ornaments and 16 rings," he added.

DAUGHTER FELL, INJURED, PLEASE COME TO HOSPITAL

Nagar said that on the day of the incident, he received a call from Hrithik's family. One of the family members told him that Deepika accidentally slipped and injured herself. They had taken her to Sharda Hospital.

"As we went to the hospital, we were told that Deepika was dead," said Sanjay. Refuting the claims of suicide, he said, "My daughter was mentally strong; she would never take any such step."

Alleging that the in-laws killed Deepika, Sanjay further mentioned that her body bore numerous bruises resulting from physical scuffles. The victim's body had a deep wound in the leg and several bruises on her face.

Sanjay and his brother mentioned that Deepika was often subjected to verbal and physical violence. On several occasions, Sanjay and other family members had to intervene to stop problems. On the day of her death, he and his brother-in-law rushed to Hrithik's house to resolve a problem. However, as soon as they came back, they received a call regarding her injury.

The family members further urged a police encounter for all the accused involved in this case.

POLICE ARREST HUSBAND, FATHER-IN-LAW

The local police soon rushed to the spot upon receiving the information about the incident. They took the body into their custody and sent it for a post-mortem to ascertain the actual reason behind the death.

Shailendra Kumar Singh, a senior police officer, further informed that based on the written complaint submitted by the deceased woman’s family, a formal case has been registered under relevant sections of the law. The police have arrested the victim's husband and father-in-law in connection with the case. Further evidence collection and legal investigation into the matter are underway.
