Lakhs of UPSC aspirants appearing for the Civil Services Examination will now be able to check official answer keys shortly after the Preliminary exam, as the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has announced a major reform aimed at increasing transparency and reducing uncertainty for candidates.

For the first time, the UPSC will release a Provisional Answer Key for the Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination 2026 soon after the exam is conducted.

Candidates will also be allowed to raise objections and submit supporting documents if they believe an answer has been marked incorrectly.

The move is expected to bring relief to candidates who previously had to wait months, and in some cases nearly a year, for the release of official answer keys.

During this period, many relied on coaching institutes’ unofficial answer keys to estimate their scores.

Calling it “a new beginning”, UPSC Chairman Dr Ajay Kumar said the initiative reflects the Commission’s efforts to improve transparency, responsiveness and timely communication with aspirants.

“This initiative reflects the Commission’s ongoing endeavour to bring greater transparency, responsiveness, and timely communication with candidates,” he said, adding that the policy seeks to make the examination process more participative while maintaining fairness and merit.

WHY THE CHANGE MATTERS

The new system is likely to reduce confusion among candidates after the Preliminary examination.

With access to the provisional answer key, aspirants can assess their expected performance earlier instead of depending on unofficial sources.

It may also help candidates make informed decisions regarding preparation for the next stages of the exam.

The reform addresses a long-standing demand from UPSC aspirants who have repeatedly sought quicker access to answer keys and a mechanism to challenge disputed questions.

CANDIDATES CAN RAISE OBJECTIONS TILL MAY 31

After the release of the provisional answer key, candidates will be able to submit representations or objections through the Online Question Paper Representation Portal (QPRep) available on the UPSC website.

According to the Commission, representations can be submitted till May 31, 2026, at 6 PM.

Candidates raising objections must:

  • Indicate the answer they believe is correct

  • Provide a brief explanation

  • Upload supporting documents from three authentic sources

This process is expected to give candidates more time to review questions carefully and challenge possible errors.

SUBJECT EXPERTS TO REVIEW ALL OBJECTIONS

UPSC said every representation received from candidates will be examined by subject experts with domain knowledge.

Experts will review explanations and supporting evidence submitted by candidates before recording their views on disputed answers.

The final answer key will be prepared only after all objections are considered.

According to the Commission, the policy has been introduced to strengthen transparency, accountability and confidence in the examination process.

The introduction of provisional answer keys marks one of the notable procedural changes in recent years.
