Gurgaon Assembly Constituency

Gurgaon, also known as Gurugram, is a district in the Indian state of Haryana. It is strategically located adjacent to the national capital, Delhi, and forms a part of the National Capital Region (NCR). The district is situated in the southeastern part of Haryana and covers an area of 1,258 square kilometers. The district headquarters is located in the city of Gurugram.

As per the 2011 Census, the population of Gurgaon district is approximately 15.14 lakh (1.514 million), with a population density of 1204 people per square kilometer. The gender ratio stands at 854 females for every 1000 males. The literacy rate in the district is notably high at 84.70%, with male literacy at 90.46% and female literacy at 77.98%.

Gurugram has historical roots that trace back to Hindu scriptures. It is believed to be the village of Guru Dronacharya, the teacher of the Pandavas and Kauravas in the epic Mahabharata. Yudhishthira, the eldest of the Pandavas, is said to have gifted Gurugram to Guru Dronacharya. Over the centuries, the area has been ruled by various dynasties, including the Rajputs, Yadavas, Marathas, and Mughals.

Gurugram has transformed into a major hub for information technology and IT-enabled services. In 2018, the district exported IT and IT services worth ₹18,000 crore. The region hosts numerous multinational companies and is also known for its industries related to cotton textiles, mechanized weaving, and agricultural equipment. Additionally, the district is notable for its agricultural production, primarily cultivating wheat, oilseeds, millet, sorghum, and pulses.

Gurgaon is one of the 90 assembly constituencies in Haryana and is part of the Gurgaon Lok Sabha constituency. The district includes a total of nine assembly constituencies, four of which lie within Gurgaon district itself.

In the 2019 Haryana Assembly elections, BJP candidate Sudhir Singla won the Gurgaon seat with 81,953 votes. Independent candidate Mohit Grover received 48,638 votes, while Congress candidate Sukhbir Kataria secured 23,126 votes.

In the previous 2014 Haryana Assembly elections, BJP candidate Umesh Aggarwal emerged victorious with 106,106 votes. INLD candidate Gopi Chand Gehlot garnered 22,011 votes, and Congress candidate Dharambir Gaba obtained 19,094 votes.
