Habba Kadal Assembly Constituency

Habba Kadal is a prominent assembly constituency located in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. It forms a part of the Srinagar Lok Sabha constituency. Situated near the Jhelum River in Srinagar, the area is historically significant due to the wooden bridge constructed across the river. This bridge was originally built in 1551 by Sultan Habib Shah of the Shah Miri dynasty and is one of the seven original bridges that have been a longstanding feature of the city.

The bridge's history includes a significant reconstruction during the Dogra rule after it was damaged in the massive flood of 1893. Although there were plans to dismantle the bridge, it underwent repairs starting in 2013, which took two years to complete. By 2015, the bridge was reopened to the public, restoring a vital link within the city.

In the 2014 Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly elections, the Habba Kadal seat was won by Shamim Firdous of the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) with 4,955 votes. The runner-up was Moti Kaul of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), who secured 2,596 votes. Zaffar Meraj of the Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party (JKPDP) came in third with 992 votes, followed closely by Raman Mattoo of the Indian National Congress, who received 973 votes.

The Kashmir story is much bigger than BJP's fortunes

The present and future of Kashmir matters more than the fortunes of political parties. That a free-and-fair election was held in Jammu and Kashmir and saw enthusiastic participation by the people is much more significant than the electoral outcome. This is why the process, and not its performance, should enthuse the BJP.

Why Omar Abdullah is leaning towards PM Modi

Omar Abdullah's relentless emotional campaign saw the National Conference (NC) win 42 seats and emerge as the biggest party in Jammu and Kashmir. Now, Omar is leaning towards the Modi-led Centre to run a smooth government. Can the reconciliatory tone also bridge a divide and forge ties?

A Communist defeats an Islamist in rare Kashmir election battle

The political landscape of Jammu and Kashmir has undergone a sea change, but one of the constants is Mohammed Yousuf Tarigami. The CPM veteran has kept the Communist flag flying in Kulgam since 1996. This time, Tarigami defeated a Jamaat-backed rival, who sought votes in the name of Islam, with his development pitch.
