The district of Dhanbad was formed in 1956 by merging the old Dhanbad subdivision of the Sadar subdivision of former Manbhum district, along with Chas and Chandan Kiyari police stations. Dhanbad has been recognized as a police district since 1928.

The Damodar River is the main river flowing through the district, entering Dhanbad at its confluence with the Jamuria River. Part of its course demarcates the western boundary of Dhanbad with the Hazaribagh district.

Dhanbad is one of the oldest and largest markets in the region and serves as a hub for large-scale industries, particularly known for its coal mines and industrial establishments. The area is surrounded by approximately 112 coal mines, with an annual production of 27.5 million tons, generating a revenue of 7,000 million rupees from the coal business.

In the 2019 Assembly elections, Raj Sinha of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won the seat with 120,773 votes. His main competitor, Mannan Mallik of the Indian National Congress, received 90,144 votes, while the independent candidate Ranjit Singh alias Bablu Singh garnered 2,852 votes.

In the previous 2014 Assembly elections, Raj Sinha emerged victorious with 132,091 votes, defeating Mannan Mallik who received 79,094 votes, and JVM(P)s Ramesh Kumar Rahi who secured 4,195 votes.
